As excitement spread after the announcement of the hosting of Jamzone in New York City, promoters have started unraveling details about the event beginning with the announcement that ‘Gully God’ Mavado has been confirmed to perform at the event.

Jamzone NYC, which is slated for August 09, 2014 at The Village, Ralph Avenue, Brooklyn, is promised to be nothing less than adrenaline-charged and plans have definitely kick-started in this direction with the booking of Mavado!
The artist, whose real name is David Constantine Brooks, is no stranger to Jamzone and nor is he to Brooklyn so when those two are brought together, what do you get? The ultimate Brooklyn shutdown, Guyanese style!

Mavado over the years skyrocketed on charts across the Caribbean with hits like ‘So Special’, ‘Settle Down’, ‘Star Bwoy’, ‘Hope and Pray’, ‘Last Night’, ‘Pepper’, ‘Caribbean Girls’, ‘Mr. Tek Weh Yuh Gal’, ‘Delilah’, etc. Now U.S. based and signed with We the Best Music Group, Mavada was able to expand his fan base and released under this label ‘Emergency’ featuring Ace Hood and ‘Survivor’ featuring Akon. Other popular collaborations are ‘Give it all to me’ with Nicki Minaj and ‘Take it’ with Karian Sang.

More acts are yet to be added to the Jamzone NYC lineup.
While this will be the first year for Jamzone to be hosted in the U.S., the event is in its fourteenth year in Guyana where it is established as the greatest calendar event. Promoters are aiming for Guyana’s most anticipated event to make a similar impact on the international scene.

Slingerz Caribbean Summer Jam

On Saturday the 17th day of June, 2013, Slingerz Family Entertainment staged their Slingerz Caribbean Summer Jam at the Guyana National Stadium. The two featured artistes were supposed to have been Tommy Lee and Mavado of Jamaica. There were also performances by other local artistes, whom Slingerz have been at pains to promote.

These local artistes, who included Alabama, Malcolm Ferreira, Kwesi Ace and Jory, charmed the crowd and represented fully the budding and exciting crop of local artistes now appearing on the national stage.

Tommy Lee also performed and enthralled and enchanted his fans for just over an hour with a thrilling and powerful performance.

Slingerz Family extends its heartfelt thank you to the Artistes, fans, Guyana Police Force, organisers and contributors to the event and promises the local fans to continue its quest to bring quality entertainment to Guyana.

Unfortunately, however, Movado did not perform at the said event as advertised and for this Slingerz Family extends its profound apologies to the Guyanese public.

However, notwithstanding the false and malicious statements made by and attributed to Movado regarding the events that led to his non-performance, Slingerz Family wishes to bring to the public’s attention the true facts.

The agreement to have Movado perform at the show was entered into since on or around the 26th day of June, 2013.

At the time it was agreed that fourteen (14) persons would make up Movado’s entourage. The initial deposit, being 50% of the agreed sum, was paid to the Artiste.

The travel itinerary agreed upon between the parties was communicated to the artiste and accepted. The artiste was supposed to have begun travelling on the 15th day of August, 2013, with a view to arriving in Guyana on the 16th day of August, 2013 by way of Caribbean airlines. All the necessary bookings were made and paid for by the Slingerz family Entertainment Group.

The travel arrangements made included funds sent to the artiste management team to facilitate travel from his residence in Jamaica to the airport. Whilst it was agreed that Slingerz Family would fund the cost associated with the travel of the artiste and his entourage to the Jamaican airport where they were expected to board the same flight upon which Tommy Lee travelled, it was incumbent on the artiste management team to make the arrangements for their transport to the airport.

Earlier, communications were received from the artiste management team that everyone had checked in online and everything was in place for them to travel.
However, upon checking with the airline to determine whether the artiste and his entourage had arrived at the airport and checked in to travel, Slingerz Family learnt that they had not.

Contact was then made with the artiste manager who indicated that the bus they had enlisted to transport them to the airport arrived late and as such they missed the flight. He indicated that “god aint coming and if yall want god fuh come u have to send a private jet for he” After expressing the view that this was likely to put the Slingerz Family Entertainment group in an embarrassing position as they had established a reputation of always delivering on their promise to bring artiste to these shores, Slingerz Family promise to do all within their power to ensure the artiste arrived in Guyana.

The chartering of a private jet at that ninth hour appeared prohibitive in terms of accessibility and cost, however, in an effort not to disappoint its Guyanese fan base, Slingerz Family sought to make every possible effort to ensure the artiste arrived, which would be at an additional cost to Slingerz Family, through no fault of theirs.

After great endeavours, Slingerz Family enlisted the help of a private local aircraft to travel to Jamaica to transport the artiste and his team. The specifications of the aircraft and the flight schedule were communicated to and accepted by the artiste and his management team.

The flight departed Guyana and arrived in Jamaica, where, Slingerz Family learnt, the artiste made several objections to the type of aircraft, having already been apprised of the specifications of the aircraft before it travelled. Slingerz Family were also informed by the flight officials that when the flight stopped in Curacao for refueling, as was discussed and agreed upon between the parties, the artiste began to behave in an untoward manner complaining bitterly about various matters whilst proclaiming that he is “the god’ and demanded that he be taken back to Jamaica. This caused the flight to be delayed in Curacao for three hours before the artiste was persuaded to rejoin and to continue the journey.

This delay caused the flight to enter the Guyana airspace after 18:00 hours on the 17th day of August, 2013. Slingerz Family Entertainment received communications from officials at the Ogle International airport that because of international regulations the plane would not be permitted to land and as such the plane was redirected to Trinidad. This caused a further delay.as endeavours were made to get clearance from the relevant local authority for the plane to land.

After acquiring permission through the intervention of the good offices of the relevant officials, the plane landed at Ogle International at approximately 23:45 hours. After clearing immigration, a process that took some time due to the lateness of the hour and the fact that the flight was unscheduled, Movado and his entourage were met by officials from the Slingerz Family and transported to the Princess hotel, arriving there at approximately 01:20 hours. There Movado occupied the Presidential suite as per request and his entourage other rooms.

At the hotel, after refreshing themselves, the artiste management was asked to have his band attend the stadium to tune their instruments. It had been explained to Movado that he would appear on stage before before Tommy Lee as, based on past experience, Slingerz Family Promotions had concerns about the restlessness of the crowd when Tommy Lee, who has developed a wide and impressionable fan base, appeared.

At that point, Movado and his entourage objected vehemently stating that he was the “superstar” and insisted that he headlined the show.

All this time, Slingerz Family Entertainment was hard-pressed since they had been given a stipulated time by the police authority regarding when the show should conclude. At their request, the Guyana Police Force was even kind enough to extend the time a bit longer.

Nevertheless, word was sent to the Tommy Lee camp asking whether they would facilitate the promoters by appearing first and they readily agreed. Tommy Lee took the stage a little after 2am.

Movado then expressed his reluctance to perform nevertheless stating that he felt Slingerz Family Entertainment disrespected him by seemingly promoting Tommy Lee and Gaza over him.

At the conclusion of Tommy Lee’s performance and whilst still discussing with a Slingerz Family representative whether he would perform, Movado indicated that the present show was Tommy Lee’s show and maybe Slingerz family should hold a show the next day, which would be the Movado show.

A short while after word was received that members of the Guyana Police force had called an end to the show.

Slingerz Family Entertainment’s deepest regret in all of this, notwithstanding the substantial financial losses and public image damage involved is that the local fans were cheated of an opportunity to experience all that they were promised. Slingerz family Entertainment vows to ensure that a repeat of this unfortunate situation does not reoccur by enlisting artiste in the future who are cognizant of their responsibility to the public as much as their own financial well-being.

We deny owing Movado the sums he has alleged in his statements or any sum at all. Slingerz Family Entertainment has honoured all financial obligations to the artiste in accordance with the agreement and the artiste’s inability to perform was in no wise due to the fault of Slingerz Family Entertainment. We have experienced considerable difficulty with the particular artiste regarding flight arrangements, being forced to change same on several occasions. We regret the inconvenience caused to our fans.
THANK YOU

Jamzone Regional Night Review

Mavado aka Gully Gad performing at Jamzone Regional Night 2011
Mavado aka Gully Gad performing at Jamzone Regional Night 2011

We at Guyanalive.com think it is only in this beautiful country of ours that an entertainment company can plan a show and have as much hype before the show, like what happened with dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel and the Hits and Jams family. The details are still sketchy as to why the Jamaican artiste did not show (despite being paid a hefty advance), but the show went on with the other item on the list, Mavado. Let us first say that the turnout was quite large, even though most persons complained about the absence of “Di Teacha”. And Mavado held his own with sheer skill, not that we expected any less.

Natural Black performing at Jamzone Regional Night 2011

The first entertaining item was local star Jory. Those of you who have been to shows that featured Jory know that when we say he was hard, you know we’re telling the truth. He commanded the crowd with his lyrics and made them sway from to side to side, bobbing their heads in jubilation and showing abundant “gun fingers”. That was followed by Guyana – born superstar, Natural Black. He was naturally a performer, with tracks that touch our hearts and our minds. Even though the aroma of marijuana was rampant, the high we experienced was encouraged by fantastic music. We at Guyanalive.com recommend that H&J feature this phenomenon in all their dancehall and reggae acts.

Then, like a pleasant surprise at Christmas time, Mavado entered the stage! Even though there were pauses by the sound system, the National Stadium at Providence wasted absolutely no time grooving to the “Gully God’s Stulla Rhythms”. Hit after hit, like a Mike Tyson fight, Movado delivered to all in attendance. Males and females sang each song (lyric for lyric) while jumping and throwing their hands in their air. The young and the old (well, not too old) never missed a beat while gyrating to the sounds that now helps to define dancehall music.

Now that we have expressed our joy from being at the Jamzone Regional Night we want to firstly say that it was very devastating to know that the “Gaza King” was not there. Even though we think there would have been some tension between supporters if he was there, we still missed him. We know for a fact that it was out of the promoters’ hands to change the outcome of the show so we will not go further. We enjoyed the atmosphere of the show; ghetto, lively and exciting. On the Guyanalive.com scale we give it a 6 1/2 out of a possible 10, only because Vybz Kartel was absent. Sorry Hits and Jams, better luck next time.

Jamzone Regional Night: Vybz Kartel/Mavado Concert

Vybz Kartel/Mavado Concert not a lyrical battle but a celebration of great Dancehall Music!

Mavado at Jamzone Regional Night 2010
Mavado at Jamzone Regional Night 2010

By now its general news that Vybz Kartel and Mavado will be headlining the Jamzone Summer Break ‘Regional Night’ concert which will be held at the Guyana National Stadium on August 19th; however amidst the excitement, the organizers as well as the artistes are reminding fans that this will not be a musical clash but simply a night of great Dancehall music and entertainment!

Ever since the news of this musical coalition became public, fans have been anxiously anticipating this showdown which is expected to be one of the most attended shows in Guyana’s history. However, in light of the pervading remnants of the lyrical feud in which these two artistes were engaged, the organizers are quite aware of the fact that fans may misconstrue the aim of this event. As mentioned earlier, this will not be a clash or war but both artistes have overcome their differences and merely intend to entertain their Guyanese fans.

The Hits and Jams team is adamant in conveying this message to the public, to maintain our reputation of hosting fun, clean, incident and violence-free events. This show was not created with aims of fueling any animosity between extremist fans and we hope that supporters nationwide are not attending with ulterior intentions.

This concert will feature as part of the Jamzone Summer Break Weekend, an annual calendar event in Guyana. This year Jamzone comprises of ten days of fun-packed activities inclusive of jazz and food festivals, kids zone, sports tournaments and several Super Concerts featuring some of the biggest local, Caribbean and International acts.

The Gully God to invade the Guyana National Stadium!

mavadoYes! The rumors are true! As many may have already heard Jamzone Dancehall/ Reggae Night will be headlined by one of the major Jamaican Dancehall artistes. Die hard Dancehall fans can get ready for one night of great entertainment since Jamaican Superstar Movado has been confirmed for this event.

David Constantine Brooks who is known to the world as Mavado or more recently “The Gully God”, the singer behind the eerie wails of “Anywayyy!” and “Gangsta for life!” has safely secured himself as one of the most consistent artistes while dominating the airwaves with his mind-blowing tracks.

The singer who made his debut in 2004 with the single ‘Real McKoy’ has gained immense attention as an artiste, not only in the region, but Mavado has collaborated with international artistes such as Jay Z, Foxy Brown, Bobby Valentino, Wyclef Jean, Lil Wayne and T-Pain.
This EME award winner is currently working on his fourth album ‘Life of Gully God’ and is enjoying a number one spot with single ‘Come into my room’ feat Jamaican singer Stacious.

The Hits & Jams Promotional Team is still set to announce more acts for the event but insist that it will be a high energy concert.

Mavado says “Don’t let anybody fool you… Education is the key”

MavadoAs if Guyana has not had its fair share of live performances from Jamaican artiste Mavado, on Christmas Night thousands flocked to the Vege Village super concert for another serving. Just as he promised he ‘shut down the west side.’ But there is more to this often controversial artiste whose name often lands in the news.  During an entertainment exclusive interview on the fast becoming popular Caribbean music Box Programme he reveled that he prefers to let his performance and lyrical shots speak for him be cause  as he puts it ” me nah inn a dem bragging thing”

Speaking to the youths who often get lost in and adopt the musical messages as lifestyles he made it categorically clear that they should understand that ‘education is the key” he also  advised them to not be fooled into “taking up guns everyday and killing each other because he says “if you do that everyone would soon be dead.”

While he represents for the ‘Gully side’ he told the Guyanese youths on the programme aired on BTV 2 that if they aspire to be like ‘the Gully god’ or Natural Black then they have to have a mind of their own and keep a real long term aim and work towards it.

“You can’t have an aim towards the destruction of yourself, friends and family. Aim towards prosperity,” Mavado added.

Reflecting on being the initial ban from Guyana he expressed thanks to the Government for lifting the ban but remains adamant that “me nah know what mek dem ban  me last time  cause me nah do nothing.”
