The Guyana National Stadium was one big soca party last Saturday as Pulse Entertainment held their Pulse Summer Fete featuring the Karma Band, Shal Marshall and Machel Montano and the HD band. It didn’t rain but EVERYONE was WET!!!

The hype, the revelry and the exhilaration of Carnival was what was dished out to the Guyanese patrons. The show opened with the Karma Band performing everything imaginable from dancehall to rap to R&B to soca and of course their chutney hits. They were later joined by Shal Marshall who performed his hits such as “Type Ah Wine”, “Trouble”, “Whole Day” and “Don’t Stop Wine.”

After a brief interlude (filled with music played by local DJs to keep the hype) Machel and the HD band were introduced. He was accompanied by Farmer Nappy and Patrice Roberts. Before his performance, Guyanalive got a chance to chat with him. When asked, what are people to expect for his performance he said “bare love and energy”.

And that is indeed what patrons got. Machel rushed on stage signing “Advantage” with his dancers in tow. Energy was ever-present and love, well Machel really and truly loves Guyana. He sang an old Guyanese hit “Bangali Babu” and paid homage to the residents of Linden.
Farmer Nappy joined Machel on stage and belted out his hits such as “Surrender”, “You Make Me”, and “Flirt” to name a few. Machel then took over and increased his pace. Energy on loud! A Machel Montano show is not complete without a dancing display by his very flexible and overly hype dancers. Dancing lessons, patrons take note.

The lone female in the band, Patrice Roberts came out next and had the crowd in a frenzy as she sang songs such as “I Am Soca”, “Temper Wine” “Push Bumper” and “Slow Wine”. There wasn’t a dry person in the stadium when the HD band completed their performance.
Throughout the show, Machel took patrons on the ultimate soca journey with hits such as “Illegal”, “Bottle Ah Rum”, “Gyal Wuk” “Bend Over”, “Mr Fete”, “Vibes Cyan Done”, “Pump Your Flag”, “Congo Man”, “Go Down”, “One More Time”, “Craziness”, “Toro”, “Wining Season” and many many more.

By the way, Machel was accompanied by his mother who looked on as her son did what he does best; his success must be credited to her overwhelming support, I’m sure!

Machel Sell Awwf!

Machel Montano and HD Band at Advantage Concert

When you woke today and saw all the media avenues talking about the Machel Montano Show last night at the National Stadium and you realized that you were not there, and you started feeling bad, it served you right! It was absolutely the most fun the Guyanalive.com team has had in a while. Hands down!

The atmosphere was fantastic, with lights and stage settings that would make your jaw drop. There were bars and food stalls at every convenient location. Even the portable toilets were strategically placed! After taking in the ambience and being hyped by the juggliang skills of the Fusion Sound Company, the night’s first entertainer was Spiderman. Even though the crowd did not seem to be completely feeling his vibe he held his own. Then we were pleasantly surprised when we knew that Militant was our next performer. The guy that brought us songs like “Passion” took us down memory lane and paved the way nicely for the next big local artiste. Jory, with his clever play on words and great ability to ride on any rhythm, made us laugh, shout and scream to all of his hits. Even an old controversial favorite rocked the crowd without pause. After Jory’s amped performance Fusion continued to wow us with their smooth track selections while we waited with glee for the King of Soca and his entourage.

Gyrating Crowd

Then, as if we could have prepared for it anyway, Machel Montano was on stage blowing us away with just his mere presence. It was an extremely wonderful collage of soca hits, calypso tunes, classics and hot new road marches. He definitely proved to the lucky citizens of this country that he is indeed the King of Soca (sorry Rupee). The HD Band did not miss a beat as they backed up Mr. Montano, nor any of the other performers for that matter. Farmer Nappy was on next to continue the soca fete with hits like “belly dancer” that had the ladies “screwing the bulb” all night. Then Patrice Roberts ensured that our waists were completely gyrating when she tore the place down with her sexy voice and sultry moves. Some men could not keep their eyes glued from the stage. Zan, though his act was short and sweet, made sure that there was never a dull moment in last night’s festivities. Let us also say, in no uncertain terms, that the HD Dancers were fabulous! They did not even seem tired even though they danced non-stop for hours with choreographed and spontaneous sessions.

Patrice Roberts performing at Advantage Concert

The beautiful Patrice Roberts and a dancer named Whitney showed us time and time again how to shake a backside, move a waist and tremble thighs like it was a dance class for beginners. They were exceptional!

However, they cliché that reads “nothing good lasts forever” was unfortunately proven again. There were audio problems that endured for what seemed like an eternity. We at Guyanalive.com understand that these things happen and sometimes they are uncontrollable, but that did not help when the crowd became frustrated and started to depart in small increments. Eventually, the sound was restored but at a mediocre level and it was too late. Patrons were using profanity to describe their disgust while they walked to exits. After quite some time the sound was properly restored and the jams resumed like there was never a problem to begin with. Machel and his crew did a job well done and made it seem effortless. If that isn’t entertainment then we don’t know what is. Thank you H&J for making our nights, and our weekends. We socanites cannot wait for the next concert!

No More Excuses, They are Here

Yes soca fans, you heard it exclusively from Guyanalive.com that Machel Montano and the HD Band are in Guyana to rock your world come Saturday June 18, 2011 at the National Stadium. Guyanalive.com was there at the VIP Lounge of the Timehri International Airport when the Soca King and his posse entered. They were pumped and ready to please the thousands of fans that would fill the stadium with their tantalizing melodies and eye opening performances. Every band member (Machel Montano, Patrice Roberts, Farmer Nappy and Zen) promises a stellar show and said that they would be very appreciative for a large turn – out.

The media flocked the group and bombarded them with questions about their past and future performances, their plans and ambitions and even their take on fathers of the world, but Guyanalive.com was particularly impressed when the band spoke of their determination to succeed, their drive to entertain not just the Caribbean, but the world, their quest to not be categorized and their spiritual and humble beliefs that get them through each day. After a few photo ops we allowed them to hop on their bus and get to their hotel because we all know that they have a lot of work to do on Saturday night.

Additionally, Guyanalive.com also managed to grab a few words with the reigning Ms. Guyana Jamzone, Jovan Wilson, who said that she is simply enjoying being queen. Her ultimate passion is to be actively involved in local tourism and she is working towards that but she is currently preparing for another pageant in Antigua, and then to return Guyana to compete for the Ms. Jamzone International Crown. We at Guyanalive.com wish her nothing but the best.

Unfortunately, there are two issues that we at Guyanalive.com have to stress on. First, please remember to put your mobile phones on vibrate when you are in a press conference. It is very distracting to everyone to hear a phone ring during such an event. Second, it was very unprofessional of the H&J Team to promise media personnel refreshments and not follow through on their promise. Not only did we have to endure that, but we were told last minute to make alternative travel arrangements to return to the capital city (at their expense of course). Bottom line? Treat your media colleagues better in the future.
Oh, before we forget, all you socanites can follow Machel Montano on Twitter @machemontanohd

Machel arrives in Guyana ready to thrill Guyanese Fans

Machel MontanoSeveral days ahead of the mega Hits and Jams concert yesterday after much hype soca sensation Machel Montano arrived in Guyana to enjoy the nation’s many mash festivities.

The concert is sponsored by Ansa Mcal’s Stag Beer and will feature Machel as eel as artistes the likes of Patrice Roberts, Zan and Farmer Nappy backed by the HD band. Machael who will be enjoying his first Mashramani experience this year said that the other HD band artistes are completing Trinidad Carnival commitments and will be arriving in Guyana on Monday.

“I’ve performed in Guyana before but this time it’s even more special because this time while I did not perform at carnival because of other commitments I’m here in Guyana for     Mashramani; and I’m bringing a new show, new songs and a new album and I’m here to a good time so come out and support,” the artistes told reporters at the Hits and Jams TV station.

The artistes recently collaborated with Mainstream artistes Janet Jackson and Pit Bull said aside from coming to give Guyanese a good time as he had prophesied that eh would return added that he came early because he is a man of his word and his word is good.

Having performed as the curtain raiser for Beyonce on Thursday night in Trinidad the artistes said the experience was fulfilling and has built on his  quest to take Caribbean music especially soc  to the main stream music arena.

As part of his welcome to Guyana the artiste was presented with a basket of sunshine snacks by the Guyana representative and it was also announced that he recently became  the endorser for the product and will be using this deal to also influence children for positivism.

Being dubbed  a possibly the best soca artistes  for his ever building hype and energising music he said he does not feel pressured by the demand for his music and the creation of an even better  product every time.

To him what has kept soca back is the  fact that  the music is often  produced with a focus on the Caribbean music demands but said if that is to change it will mean that  he will have to focus on meeting the needs of the international market.

The artistes yesterday visited   the Carib mash camp and also made appearances at several Ansa Mcal sponsored parties where he signed autographs, gave away free tickets and socialised. On Mash Day Montano will be observing the float parade and soaking up Guyana’s Mashramani showcase before hitting the stage at the Georgetown Cricket Club Bourda  for the ‘Machel for Mash concert’.

Come out and party offerings to Guyana the group has staged   a Mash launch and two successful parties at the GMR&SC. Now on Monday the group says all roads lead to the Pulse Night Club, Pier Street Kitty where an ‘All White Edition party’ dubbed ‘Acceleration’ would be staged.

On Monday night Machel will be appearing at the Hits and Jams all white glow party too.

The Hits and Jams 2010 Mash offerings began with the Mash Crank up on January 30 that featured Jamaican artistes Charlie Black and Mad Do. The following weekend they hoisted the Soca Jeans party and last week they offered partying fans the ‘Outrageous in colour party.

On Mash Night all the stops will be pulled out for soca fans to experience a most memorable full soca fete where in addition to Machel artiest such as Zan, Patrice Roberts, Farmer Nappy, Guyana’s soca sensation Jumo, Jory, Vanilla, B52 and Spiderman. In addition Guyana’s Heat Wave band will offer the musical accompaniment for several new front line artists including Soca monarch 2007, Malo.

Machel arrived in Guyana fresh out of the Beyonce ‘I am’ show titled ‘boy meets girl’ in the Queen’s Park Savannah,’ Trinidad.

Montano thrills at Beyonce show

Reports out of Trinidad are that Thursday evening the soca superstar took to the stage for his opening act performance at 18:00hrs with a grand fanfare that included an intro featuring Optimus Prime and ending with Destra Garcia joining him on stage to sing ‘Is Carnival’.

It was the first time in three years that the two soca stars had performed together on stage.

After the introduction, the band then struck up the music for ‘No Behaviour’, as the HD Dancers took the stage. Then Montano appeared dressed in a silver outfit.

With the crowd screaming, Montano sang, ‘I Missed You’. He then moved into ‘The Road’ followed by ‘Doh Hold Me Back’.

By this time, more people were getting into the groove and the band moved into ‘Fly Away’. Next up was ‘Slow Wine’, opening the way for Patrice Roberts to enter and exit within one minute.

Montano took the focus again to do some new music as well, including ‘Pepper’ with Serani’s vocals superimposed, followed by ‘Ramajay’. Jamaican dancehall artiste Busy Signal then joined Montano with dancers to perform ‘Whoii Gyul Whoii’.

‘I can’t remember when last I’ve felt so happy. I took time off to reflect. You are no longer just fans, you are my family. This next song is for Haiti. Haiti will rise again,’ Montano told the crowd.

Montano then sat at a piano to sing ‘I Love You’, which he originally did in tribute to producer Shel Shoc, who died last year. Joining him on vocals was Umi Marcano.

Next was ‘Too Young To Soca’ alongside Timell Rivas, followed by ‘Real Unity’ with Pranava. From there it was pure pace, beginning with ‘One More Time’ and continuing with ‘Dance With You’, ‘Congoman’, ‘Is Carnival’ and more.

Jamzone Summer Break Soca show lives up to the hype – Machel ‘sell off’

A soca therapy session administered by ‘Dr. Machel Montano’ and his High Definition band at the stadium on Saturday night, has certainly erased any doubt that he loves Guyana as a performing stage.

There was hardly a person with dry clothing on Sunday morning when “the one time” too young to soca artiste concluded his performance at the Jamzone Summer Break Weekend. This came after several years of shows void of the artiste.

Some commendable Guyanese acts raised the curtain with a mixed bag of music ranging from dance hall, to hip hop, to Soca that reached crescendo with Guyana’s rubber waist Jomo Primo dishing out some of X2 hot hits including the energetic  ‘crazy’ soca song.

During his performance Jomo proved why he’s among the few Guyanese acts with mad international entertainment abilities with a bias mainly for the ladies. He caused mad frenzy vocally and with his every gyration and instruction they screamed in wild abandon.

By the end of his steamy high energy performance he was topless and dripping and so were some of the local fans.  But this was a set up for the show stopper of the night: Machel Montano.

The mere mention of his name sent a contagious fever that saw the already packed VIP area being invaded by Machel crazy fans who simply wanted to come closer.

It couldn’t have been something in the drinks because the variety represented every beverage company on the local shores and they were all well supported. And it certainly could not have been the temperature in the Providence stadium because that location is an open air venue.

Machel with help from Patrice Roberts, Farmer Nappy and one other artiste caused a soca tornado that caused even those with inhibitions to lose their selves.

They dished out hit after hit and his dancers added to the party mood too. The crowd numbering in the tens of thousands certainly had a good time void of any incidents. Some people saw it fit to steal wine here and there without rejection in most cases.

Then came the ‘toro toro’ charge that heated up the stadium. “A grade, A grade and A grade” is the verdict from the tens of thousands of Guyanese who flocked the Providence stadium for the Inaugural Jamzone Summer Break Weekend soca show.

Guyanese soca lovers have concluded that the long overdue wait for Soca king Machel Montano was certainly made up for on Saturday night into Sunday morning at the national stadium. There was not one person with dry clothing at the end of the inaugural Jamzone Summer Break weekend. Neither were there any notable complaints.

He also made a promise to the fans that if they chanted hard enough he would be back for Mashramani 2010. And they certainly did.
