Guyana gets three new Queens and Princesses at 2010 Mothers and Daughters Pageant

There can be no complaints following the staging of the Supa Stylistic 19th annual Mother and Daughter Pageant on Saturday night at the National Cultural Centre, which produced three queens and three princesses.

Senior Winners Sharon Singh and LashaunnaArguably one of the better family-oriented events, it got off to an exciting start with 23 pairs of mothers and daughters competing in Junior, Middle and Senior Categories under the theme ‘Love’s magic moment’, and it was a night of magic and love indeed.

All told, six pairs contested the Junior Category, while the Middle Category featured 10 pairs.

The most looked forward to segment, the Seniors, featured seven pairs competing for prizes of trips in and out of Guyana, jewellery, and dinners amongst other prizes.

The highlight of the evening brought out competitive examples of what the bond of mother and daughter can be to mold that fabric of strong womanhood and love for family.

In the end, the winning pairs were Sharon Singh and Lashauna, Shivonne Gill and Jenelle, and Renita Duncan and LeShae in the Senior, Middle and Junior Categories, respectively.

The seven pairs in the Senior Category were all resplendently dressed as queens and princesses in their own right but the winners of the night were the most deserving of the title, judging from the audience’s celebratory applause.

Sharon Singh and her daughter, Lashaunna were a most pleasing and relevant sight to behold in their attire. Though a bit on the chubby side, they looked like twins with their matching rust-coloured Georgette roman influenced gowns designed by Pat Coates, which softly flowed to the floor. From entrance to exit the audience celebrated their bond as they floated across the stage playfully. As the crowd favourite and winners of the judges’ nod, they will enjoy an all expenses paid trip to Barbados, jewellery, a night at Princess Hotel amongst other prizes.

First runners-up, Barbara Derrick and Tanisha wore teal (green and blue) gowns, accentuated by silver designed by Michael Chase. Their gowns were cut on the bias to create a shimmering effect as if they were at the Le Meridian Pegasus for a Presidential ball.

The second runners-up pair, Veronica Charles and Micheala wore outfits designed by Michelle Cole for a night at the Oscars. Ready for the red carpet, their elegant evening dresses were a combination of purple, turquoise and lilac with mild silver shimmering and a fish tail effect, complemented by trails.

Shivonne and JenelleWith 10 pairs in the Middle Category, though some of the contestants went on picnics, the judges sure had their work cut out as competition was fierce for the trip to Trinidad and Tobago among other prizes. However, while some thought that Dr. Karen Boyle and Keziah could have won, the majority were in support of the judges’ choice of the winners, Shivonne Gill and Jenelle.

They wore almost matching linen dresses that sported strips of red and black, which were put together by Sonia Noel for a day of fun in the National Park. Mom complemented her attire with a large hat that differentiated her from her daughter and they bonded well with a sincere playful attitude which showed that their presentation was real as best friends would do. Hence, they won over the second place finishers Dr. Boyle and her daughter.

Karen Gorden-Boyle and Keziah were dressed for the annual Inner Wheel Club tea party in pastel colours and mild yellow, accessorised by peacock feathers. Mom’s outfit was off the shoulders and it was complemented by a sombrero-like hat.

The audience celebrated when the daughter’s skirt was transformed into a white apron for mom to serve patrons at the tea party, while the mother’s bottom was removed to change her outfit into a pants suit.

The third place finishers, Kellianne Daniels and her daughter Keziah also offered a true interpretation of love’s magic moment in Guyana’s forests as created by designer Donna Ramsammy-James. Their interchangeable outfits represented Guyana’s flora and fauna.

There were only six pairs in the Junior Category but the competition was most heart-warming to see lasses from as young as four-years-old bond with their moms.

Renita and LeshaeFun and frolic at a friend’s six-year-old party is what Renita Duncan and Leshae depicted in their mostly white dresses, sprinkled with red and other flowers. The daughter blew bubbles as her mother paraded across the stage in their Olympia Sonnaram created matching dresses. And in the end they won the competition without complain from the audience.

Shivonne Gill and Donelle, the second place finishers offered a depiction of fashion and fantasy in their several shades of pink with a splash of green outfits. The daughter wore slides and pranced around in green and pink creations by Sonia Noel. Their message was one for women and cancer, and also spoke of protecting the environment.

The other pairs that competed in this category were Natalie King and Niveal, who went to a birthday party wearing orange and gold dresses designed by Cole Facts. Alana Gravesande and Nianna, who were pretty in pink and white, went to a garden party. Kauandasha Scott and Tiamare went to a tea party at the Herdmanston Lodge, while Odette Myres and Natasia enjoyed the lasses birthday party.

The other pairs in the Middle Category were Shemane Short and Shemya who went to a youth club party and fashion show wearing blue balloon-like tube tops pants suits, which transformed into strapless orange dresses much to the audience’s liking.

Althea Bristol and Collithea honoured President Bharrat Jagdeo for being named champion of the earth at a special tea party at State House. They wore two shades of blue, accessorised with bamboo and lattice work created by designer Sonia Noel.

Oneika Adams and Shanaka wore blue and pink skirt suits created by Yvonne Smith, ideal for a picnic. Sharon Bailey and Grace attended an art exhibition at the Castellani House dressed in orange linen and khaki adorned with handmade roses accessorising the attire.

Beverly Junor and Joyann wore pink to a picnic but their bond was not the best on stage.

Indira Ramnauth and her daughter Amrita wore the essence of spring in pink, pastel and violet dresses created by Michelle Cole. The daughter’s skirt was removed to reveal a pants suit while the part removed was tied around her mother’s waist to complement the mother’s dress.

To conclude that segment, Michelle Clarke and Angelique were off to the Promenade Gardens wearing orange caprice suits with some lattice work and some hand paintings as well as handmade jewellery.

The other participants in the Senior Category were Natasha Persaud and Nikesha, who donned sky blue to green dresses that had bodices of layered petals on their flowing dresses. Mom’s dress was a single strap that converted to two around the neck while the daughter’ s dress was an off the shoulder with hugging short sleeves and silver accessories that were created by Sonia Noel.

Fraulette Shepherd and her daughter Kizzy wore pearl blue satin dresses designed by Ramesh Gobin accentuated by a black section. Mom’s gown bore spaghetti straps while the daughter’s was strapless accentuated by diamantes and silver.

Omefa Elgin and Junette were headed to a cotillion and sported gowns with colours of black, red, silver and white designed by Olympia Sonnaram. The daughter’s bustier effect gown, worn off the shoulder, had some hand paintings while the mother was a bit conservative, accessorised by silver.

They both sported oriental influenced fans.

Shevone Helligar and Andriana closed that segment by dressing for a ball in cream and brown organza and bridal satin dresses that were complemented by ruffles across one side of their shoulders.

Linden beauty is Miss Atlanta Caribbean Carnival Queen 2010

Nikeisha PersaudNikeisha Persaud, 21, who was born in Linden and grew up in Mahaicony is now a Guyanese college student with a US pageant crown and title to be proud of.

On April 10, last, she proudly represented the Guyana Flag against several beauties of Caribbean countries and proved the best of the lot. For that, she was crowned Miss Caribbean Carnival Queen 2010 at the St. Philip A.M.E. Life Center Hall.

The pageant also featured intermittent Cultural presentations and was attended by a sizable gathering that represented the Caribbean Diaspora.

“Of course Miss Persaud did us all proud,” said one member of the Guyana Association of Georgia. That association did make a contribution to assist with the expenses of her evening gown which from all reports “blew all of the other contestants out of the picture.”

According to one report from an attendee, “she was unquestionably most elegant and in keeping with her most congenial prize win, I must say Nikeisha represented us to the fullest.”

Despite two “glitches” she still won! It was a small setback during her talent segment when the audio system failed frequently thereby distorting her very dramatic recital of a poem she wrote and acted out on stage.

Despite these glitches she had the crowd’s support. The crowd empathized with the audio shortages and exploded with loud claps at the end of the presentation.  The other snafu came at the question and answer part of the programme. The question asked about what she thought could be taken from the Civil Rights Law to improve Human Rights!

Nikeisha was brilliant enough to respond with a generalized advocacy that pleased the crowd which moaned at the clumsiness of the question when it was first asked, and, repeated at the request of Miss Persaud.

When the judges’ final decision was announced; one woman said “My Golden Arrowhead was in the air and an unbelievable level of National Pride that sent me running up and down the hallway where I was seated.”

According to one patron, “It was an evening I will remember for many years. Next, we celebrate big time publicly, come Memorial Weekend 2010 in ATL!
The other contenders were Jahlika Edwards– Ms Dominica, Lauren Gibson-Fleming of St Thomas USVI, and Trisha James of Trinidad and Tobago. The pageant also featured competitions for a Junior Queen and a little Princess too.

Search on for first Miss Guyana Earth Queen- Simpli Royal

Miss Earth's Top FourScreening has commenced for the inaugural Miss Guyana Earth pageant says coordinator Pamel Dillon and while six delegates have already made the shortlist from a field of 13 who auditioned. But others who are interested have one week to contact the Simpli-Royal committee before the interviews conclude.

While Guyana has yet to field a finalist at any of the major international pageants Dillon is optimistic that Guyanese beauties can actually bring home a crown and shine some positive pageant light on the country. She said “We are looking for beauties to apply for a chance to represent Guyana at the Miss Earth International pageant.”

Several competitions are carded before the big local night on June 26. as aprelude  and the organisers are looking for a line up of at least ten of the most exciting, personable, beautiful Guyanese women aged 18- 25.

Dillon added that “The ladies we are looking for have to have beauty of face and figure and possess perfect health. They must also never have had a child, never have been married and should have written CXC. They can be of any race and from any cultural background”.

Lester Rauseo of Trinidad’s beauty bank is the trainer and he is expected to arrive in Guyana shortly while the pageant’s artistic Director is Clive Prowel CEO of the Classique dance Company.

This is the inaugural pageant and Pamela Dillon, the Fanschise holder is emphatic that this is not a free for all, any girl and anything goes pageant it’s a serious event that allows beauty ambassadors to be groomed and then sent to represent our Nation. The winner and her runners up after training should be better able to think on their feet and address current affairs as well as environmental issues as spokes persons on environmental issues during and after the year has ended.

Dillon says thus far the Princess Hotel is the main sponsor of the event but the door remains open for other interested sponsors.

Among the many competitions to be staged before a queen is selected is a high fashion show featuring the delegates competing for the ‘Queen of the catwalk’ title.

The committee has employed the resources of international US based Guyanese Designer Roger Gary for that segment. This will feature the delegates showcasing Garry’s Aqua Couture line as well as creations that focus on the five elements earth, fire, wind, water and heart which symbolises love for nature and humanity.

The committee includes Wazim Khan as chairman, Wanita Huburn Public Relations Officer, Gileon James head of wardrobe, Melessa Payne is Delegate Liaison and Lester Rauseo as trainer.

Imarah in BVIAs at Wednesday, of an original pool of 20 beauties, 14 have arrived in the British Virgin Islands ahead of tomorrow’s Miss Caribbean World Pageant. Guyana is represented in the bunch. In a Platinum News entertainment story Alecia Hamm, the show’s organiser is quoted as saying that “right now they are having some serious fun”.

She also described them as a lively bunch and reported that some of the six others are experiencing financial difficulties.

Last year, Miss Dominica’s Marah Walter copped the crown from a bevy of 18 beauties and this year Miss Dominica is among the 14 contestants enjoying their stay on the islands. The others are from Anguilla, Bahamas, Barbados, BVI, Dominican Republic, Guyana, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St Kitts, St Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, USA and USVI. The BVI is represented by Miss Josefina Nunez.

Last Saturday Miss Guyana World 2010 Imarah Radix as well as the other contestants to the pageant arrived in the British Virgin Islands and was treated to a welcome reception by the Premier Hon. Ralph T. O´Neal Sunday evening at the Maria´s by the Sea.

They dined and savoured some of the delectable indigenous dishes of the BVI and rocked to music provided by the Lashing Dogs sounds.

Reports in the BVI Platinum News indicate that that some of the contestants, including host Miss BVI Josephina Nunez, dubbed the experience as providing opportunities to share and cross diverse cultures.

Miss Guyana who sparked the most comments on the Platinum News site for listing Scuba diving as a hobby is reportedly a stand out for her personality and her ability to think on her feet and is reportedly among the more eloquent of the bunch.

On Monday the delegates toured the Virgin Gorda and on Tuesday they were part of live television interviews.

Tomorrow the beauties are scheduled to appear on ZBVI radio’s Teen Talk programme while the pageant is scheduled to take place at the Multi-purpose Sports Complex starting at 19:00hrs. However, in the event the complex is not ready the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall (Cultural Centre) will be the best alternative.

The sports complex has been without electricity for more than two weeks now. “As far as I was told they are rectifying the problem. It’s a government thing, there’s nothing I can do,” Hamm is reported as stating in a Platinum News report.

Besides that, Hamm said everything else is going smoothly for show, while thanking the individuals and businesses who chipped in despite the recession. “We had some persons who were willing to work with us.”

Contestants will compete in swimwear, costumes, talent, evening wear, and for the first time a question and answer segment.

Miss BVI according to the Platinum News report is confident that she will win the pageant as she has ” been preparing since in January, going to the gym, personal training and so on.” Miss St. Lucia Glenda Kimberlyn Abbott at the function who like the other delegates are already enjoying the BVI, urged persons to come out and support the delegates as they display talent, intelligence and beauty.

Miss USA Meagan Small is a US-born Jamaican who is representing the Caribbean diaspora in the USA.

Miss Guyana Radix said the BVI is great and expressed love for the sand and water. Responding to questions about her love for scuba diving, Radix said that she does not scuba dive in Guyana, but has travelled to many countries such as Egypt, Thailand and the Margarita Islands where she does scuba diving.

Imarah who has advanced in scuba diving said “I have done five specialties in scuba diving. I do it while on vacation, I don´t scuba dive in Guyana,” the Platinum news quotes her as saying.

She said that she is prepared to put her best foot forward on tomorrow nigh and is feeling right at home with her Guyanese chaperon. She said reported that Guyanese residing in the BVI are very supportive and they are promising to attend the pageant in their numbers with Guyana flags to root for her.

The contestants were part of a photo shoot in the Virgin Gorda which Imarah dubs as one of several wonderful experiences she has had since arriving in the BVI.

She assures that she intends to do her best to represent Guyana and describes the other contestants as very friendly. Her roommate is Ms Anguilla and according to her “we are getting along very well…it’s as if we have known each other for years”.

Of the trip thus far Imarah said she’s really enjoying the culture and sights of the BVI while discovering ‘nature’s little secret’ and sharing the beauty and culture of Guyana with the contestants.

It’s Miss Bootilicious night at Club Ice

ContestantsMuch buzz has been circulating about the 2010 Miss Bootilicious Pageant, and sheer sexiness is expected when the event kicks off tomorrow at the Club Ice Sports Bar (formerly Blue Iguana Nightclub).

To date, twelve ultra sexy ladies are gearing for a steamy face-off on show night and there are some definite hotties, who are expected to blaze a trail at the venue.

Miss Bombastic has upped her act and plans to teach the Guyanese ladies a few tricks about keeping their spouses entertained and not distracted.

Much is expected from Miss ‘Lickulicious’ who is expected to take the queen’s title, but she will have to fight off the sensual creativity of Miss Ultra Slim who many has decided already has the most sexy choreography.

These two ladies will have hot competition from Liquid Honey who is an exotic dancer and performs such provocative choreography, its bound to play havoc with the male senses.

Sugar Momma has improved during rehearsals and has created a showpiece so dazzling, that housewives will now have new ideas to keep their husbands entertained always and never distracted by hustlers.

Lady Pressure who weighs almost two hundred pounds has indicated that after the show her Guyanese sisters will acknowledge that the ‘Big Mommas’ can be just as sexy and captivating as the ‘Ultra Slim Divas’.

Lady Electra, the most flexible and energetic of the lot, plans to take things to a screeching crescendo but she will have to make room for the pulsating creativity of  ‘Venom’ whose bag of tricks includes enticing two rippled and astoundingly handsome male models at the same time.

While the show is expected to explode with ‘sensual static electricity’, the promoters yesterday indicated that the event is not a ‘striptease’ show as many seems to believe but is indeed a new sexy concept that will showcase ‘ultra sexiness’ as the contestants not only model sexy lingerie but execute some of the stirring and mind boggling sensual choreographies with the help of twelve young men.

Contestants will not be judged on their beauty or intelligence but instead on their presentation during their introduction, their ultra sexiness and of course the audience response.
