“Welcome To The Far South” is Sytes’ official mixtape series, with the release of his first installment entitled “Tote My Flag.” Sytes’ mixtape includes a blend of Hip-Hop and Dancehall, featuring established artists featured on his project. Ray Sytes isn’t just doing music for his fans, but for his country as well.

“We have many talented artists in R&B, Reggae, Dancehall, and Soca but not in Hip-Hop, so I’m filling that void,” says Ray Sytes.

Originally from Georgetown, Guyana at a very early age, Sytes relocated to the States where he found a love for music other than Dancehall… Hip-Hop. Living in Flatbush, Brooklyn, Ray Sytes gained knowledge of rhyming and writing then moved to Queens where he now resides. With a large success rate of artists coming from the Tri-State Area like Biggie, Nas, and Jay-Z, Ray Sytes has an opportunity he won’t let slip through.

“Tote My Flag,” features a remix of the hit “Star Bwoy,” with Jamaican musician Mavado, as well as features including Choppa Zoe, Clova, DJ Lantan and many more. With 5 singles doing well on iTunes, you can anticipate Ray Sytes’ upcoming mixtape “Welcome To Guyana”, the second episode in his “Welcome To The Far South” series.

Proclaiming leadership of the “Far South Movement”, Ray Sytes is reppin’ for his country!

Barnwell dominates as athletes win 2nd Celebrity Basketball game

West Indies cricketer Christopher Barnwell showed that he could perform as well on the court as on the field when he managed a double at the 2nd Annual Celebrity Basketball game. Barnwell participated as a point guard for the Athletes who played against the Entertainers who won the title last year.

The game was evenly matched up to halftime with Don Gialiani drilling some smooth jumpers and layups for the entertainers, while reporter Edison Jefford and Barnwell led the charge for the Athletes. Heading into halftime the scoreboard read 23-22 in favor of the Entertainers.

The Athletes however were not daunted and went on a 6-0 run when play resumed. After this point it was all over as Jefford and Barnwell dominated the offensive boards. Barnwell finished the game with 20 points and 10 rebounds and was named MVP.

There were highlights too as singer Lisa Punch and table tennis player Jody Ann Blake provided some comical moments when they attempted to dribble the ball. Fitness trainer Curtis McKenzie was certainly fit and fast but lacked coordination thus giving the large crowd added entertainment.

Trophies and Prizes

In the supporting game Youth Basketball Guyana led by Akeem ‘the sensational dream’ Khanai defeated Knights Basketball club the evening’s hosts 44-31. QUALFON got the better of Giftland in a low scoring 21-39 game and LAPARKAN edged Republic Bank 52-49 in the opening game.

A larger than normal crowd turned out to watch the game even with a Jamzone event being held on the same night. Given the excitement and support generated by the event basketball fans are looking forward to next year.
All proceeds will be donated to the Deaf Institute.

PAHF Challenge: Guyana qualifies for Pan Am Cup in 2013

Despite a 2-0 loss to top seed and pre-tournament favourites, Uruguay, the Guyana Women’s Hockey Team has achieved its primary objective of making the final of the PAHF Challenge. The Challenge which is being played in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, begun on July 31st and will be completed when the finals are played on Sunday August 7th 2011. The top two teams in the PAHF Challenge, Guyana and Uruguay, who clash in the final tomorrow (August 7), both earn spots in the World Cup Qualifier for the Americas, the PAHF Cup, to be held in Argentina in 2013.

Going into their final pool match of the tournament against the unbeaten Uruguayans, Guyana needed to concede as few goals as possible against them to have the best chance for qualification. The Guyanese had drawn their match against Brazil 1-1 earlier in the week and now had to do their best on the final day to finish with a better goal average than the hosts to qualify for the final. The match however proved to be a difficult one with the Guyanese going down by one goal as early as the 4th minute when a powerful penalty corner strike from Uruguayan full back, Karina Bisignano, deflected off the stick of Captain Chantelle Fernandes and into the Guyanese net. Guyana played strong defence but struggled to mount any meaningful attacks as the Uruguayans controlled the possession and applied continuous pressure. In the 22nd minute, Uruguayan substitute, Florencia Norbis produced a skilful deflection on a pass across the scoring circle that proved too difficult for Alysa Xavier who had been having a fine game in goal for the Guyanese.

With the Guyanese down 0-2 at the half, their chances appeared to be slipping away as there seemed to be no way around the organised and skilful Uruguayans. Guyana would however produce a greatly improved second with brave efforts from many of their players including Leigh Sandison, Ulrica Sutherland and Xavier in goal. Uruguay would fail to produce any more goals for the remainder of the match and while Guyana managed to enjoy greater possession of the ball, never seemed to threaten the outcome. The game finished at 2-0 in favour of Uruguay.

With Brazil now needing the beat Paraguay by 5 goals in the final match of the day, the Guyanese girls remained tense as their fate was now in Paraguay’s hands. Brazil would muster a gutsy 4-1 victory but it would not be enough to deny the Guyanese their place in the final. Uruguay topped the pool round with 12 points, Guyana and Brazil managed 7 points each but Guyana placed second with a better goal average. Paraguay finished fourth in the pool with 3 points and Bermuda remained on zero at the end of the pool round. Guyana now faces Uruguay again in the finals at 14:30hrs while Paraguay will challenge Brazil for third place at 12:00hrs tomorrow, Sunday 7th.

Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Grand Parade 2011

Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Parade: Reveller
Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Parade: Reveller

I’m not sure the 44th Annual Formally, Caribana Parade, now renamed the Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival 2011, was something to brag about this year. Although it had its usual hype and vitality the stress of getting there and obtaining a proper view of the festivities was more than difficult. If you didn’t arrive early then be prepared to have to park and walk a significant distance away from the parade. Subway and the street car was the best option although at one location a street car did get into an accident and access to another one was nearly impossible so taxi cabs were the way to go.

There were some unnecessary block offs along the parade which resolved in long walks around, I must have walked for about 45 minutes before I finally arrived at a decent spot with a decent view. Another disappointment was the disorganization from some floats. Some mass players waited a long time before they finally got their costumes, and were not even informed on how to assemble it. But the biggest disappoint this year was the news of the shooting that occurred after the parade. It’s a shame to have such a tragic incident happen at such a joyous event that is supposed to represent unity and celebration among the West Indian Culture.

They came from East and West, they came from North and South, They Came from Trinidad, Guyana, Jamaica, Barbados, St. Lucia – De Entire Caribbean, North America, South America, Europe, Asia. I Believe Destra Garcia said it best, “It’s All about Unity, Togetherness, Carnival time we love de jamin’ all o we, collectively, in de bacchanal time to start de fete”.

The costumes this year were just as crazy as ever, it was great to see people pushing their creativity and creating something different and new. The girls did not disappoint either with less than barely there outfits, I don’t think at any other part of the year you see as much skin as you do at Caribana and there is no complaining on that. I can say the best part of the parade this year was …. The alcohol, a nice cold beer on this day was a great compensation. As for the food there were too many hot dog stands and not enough “food” stands available all along the parade.

Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Parade: Guyanese, Grenadian, St. Lucian

Although barricades go up every year people still find a way to jump the fence, or break it open, which causes the crazy stampede of people, so if you’re going there to relax, go early find a spot under the shade and enjoy as the parade passes by. If you plan on participating and playing Mass I suggest you do your research and find a float that knows what they’re doing and that you’re comfortable with. I’m sure next year will have the same and plus some more disappointments but at the end of the day we all look forward to meeting up with friends, family and for a great show and Caribana will never disappoint on that.

Till I find a place-The movie Premiers in Guyana

While some would think twice before they even consider it would you take someone into your home…a friend even? May be after viewing the soon to be released Guyanese movie you will be thinking differently.

Probably the lone most recent all Guyanese cast movie produced in recent times, ‘Till I Find A Place’ was filmed in Guyana and will be premiering in Guyana next week first at the National Cultural Center from June  23- 27. The movie will then be premiered at Lichas Hall Linden on July 10, Berbice: New Amsterdam on July 3 at Skeldon on July 4, and in Essequibo on July 11.

Film director and lead actor Mahadeo  Shivraj said the movie shot on location in Guyana and is based on an adaptation of Guyanese playwright Ronald Hollingsworth’s popular stage play, “Till Ah Find A Place”. The original play was written in 1991 and was re-written for movie by Shivraj.

He said “after acting in the play in Guyana I had directed it five times in NY and was an actor in it six times.”

The end result was him asking Ronald Holingsworth to make it into a movie and after filming in 2007 it was edited in 2009.  Some nine songs were also recorded for the movie and were done exclusively by Guyanese.

The movie’s Synopsis

Dave and Sonia lived in Georgetown and all was well until Sonia’s friend Donna makes an appearance at their home claiming that her house had been demolished in a storm. The time was 3 o’clock that morning.

She is accepted by Sonia against the wishes of her husband and was offered abode until she could find a place of her own.  Dave never liked Sonia because of a rumor that she was responsible for his wife believing that he was having an affair with another woman.

One can but imagine the fire and brimstone that may follow when Sonia (the Wife) had to leave temporary for the USA and Donna (the Friend) is left alone in the home with Dave (the Husband). As the events there after unravel patrons to the premier are guaranteed to be kept at the edge of your seats.

Unlike in other locally filmed movies where actors were imported to play lead roles all told it’s an all Guyanese cast of eight actors representing the realities of infidelity.

The cat and dog scenario grows when the husband, against the guest staying over get ahead of himself.  It becomes overbearing and the man decides tomorrow never comes and as is often the case much to the frustration of the husband. Heaven knows what happens when their hands accidentally meet. Will passion follow of a cuss out and bloody disaster?

The actors include Mahadeo Shivraj who plays the angry husband caught in a web of deceit, jealousy, intrigue and passion.

Rajan Tiwari and Andre Wiltshire are Dave’s Friends who are oblivious to the under currents while Linden Jumbie Jones is the guest’s boy friend who will live or die at the hands of an angry Dave and Donna is right in the middle of the cook up.

Cameo appearances will be played by Neaz Subhan, Petal Burnett, Kassia De Santos and Bibi Kadir.

Shivraj said “Its Guyanese, it’s as real as it gets and is rated 16 for a viewing audience aged years and older.”

This movie produced by Mahadeo Shivraj and stealth Productions with promotion from The Dramatic Arts Academy was filmed in 2007 and was edited in 2009.

Singers on the sound track include DJ Dutty Flex, Nadeer Bacchus, Rick Ramdehol, Eve Blazin and Rory Jagdeo while background music is produced by Avirodh Sharma.  Shivraj said after the movie premiers it goes to NY, Canada, Florida and all other places.
