Guyana Miss Jamzone Representative to be chosen via Reality Show

Always armed with aims of creating the most remarkable events and consistently raising the bar the organizers of the renowned Jamzone events are once again launching an initiative that is set to break new grounds in Guyanese Entertainment. While the newly introduced Miss Jamzone International 2010 pageant will include delegates from several Caribbean countries the local representative will be selected by means of a reality show.

The participants will be shortlisted from successful applications and interviews and over a period of weeks they will have to complete various challenges that are aimed at testing their intellectual capacity, fashion and beauty senses, ability to function efficiently under pressure and their overall ability to represent Guyana on the International scene.
The reality show will be aired weekly and the general public can participate actively by voting for their favorite contestant via text messages.

Reality shows are the current craze in television broadcast and usually attract a large audience since they integrate real unscripted dramatic or humorous situations and feature ordinary people instead of professional actors.
The Miss Jamzone International show will be aired on Hits and Jams Television (HJTV) and the National Communication Network (NCN).Guyanese are advised to brace themselves since this year’s Miss Jamzone pageant is expected to be nothing short of remarkable.

Record number of tourists expected for Jamzone 2010!

The organizers of the Jamzone Summer Break and Beach Pageant are anticipating a record-setting influx of both domestic and international tourists for this year’s Jamzone events.
The Hits and Jams Entertainment team is very optimistic about the outcome of this year’s activities since the project will undergo major changes to create a more splendid experience.

“Last year approximately 50,000 persons attended the events over the four- day span however; we estimate a definite 60% increase in that statistic. Based on the convenient dates, hotels and airline representatives that have shown eager interest in Jamzone and the fact that delegates from around the Caribbean will be included in the Inaugural Miss Jamzone International Pageant we are confident that the amount of tourists will increase drastically”, said Hits and Jams Director Kerwin Bollers.

The event which took a new format last year provides local and international tourists with four days of super concerts which include some of the biggest names in the local and international music industry and the renowned beach party and pageant.

First ‘Guyana Artistic Music Awards’ an excellent concept

But many artistes were no-shows

Henry RodneySaturday night at the National Cultural Centre proved an eye opener of the serious interest or lack there of, for the development of a Guyanese music industry. It was a night that offered honour to Guyanese musicians and entertainers past, current and future at the first local staging of the Guyana Artistic Music Awards.

Disappointing, however, was the very poor attendance that left most of the nation’s Premier entertainment theatre void of patrons; but those who attended left a satisfied bunch.

It is safe to conclude that attendance was not of the best and maybe the plethora of reggae artistes onstage could have been trimmed. But the event had its plusses as a refreshing and differently executed entertaining affair.

The curtain opened with honouree, Aubrey Mann, taking patrons back in time with his Oldie but Goldie; “Stealing love on the side” and some other classics. There were other memorable performances such as Mark Bryan dishing the 80s favourite “Sharon, Sharon gyal ah wah yah doing to yah self…” in a canary yellow body hugging all-in-one jump suit that sent the audience into a fit of  celebratory cheers as  he  gyrated  and pranced  around the stage.

Johnny Braff, who is now 72, and who received an honorary award, was a burst of humorous energy as he delivered an unaccompanied version of the hit ‘It burns inside.’ There were the more memorable acts from Donna Makeeda, and a slew of others including up and coming artistes.

Presentations were done by Mandela, Cyborg, Redemption, Daddy Rusty, Kappa Shanti, Fire Fred, Stephen Dunbar as well as the Hooper clan such.

The Mighty Rebel also received an honorary award for his contribution to calypso and he also offered true showmanship with one of his hits.

Awards

Mighty RebelGuyanese singing sensation, Jumo Primo, who has been involved in music from boyhood days, won himself a Guyana Artistic Music Awards crystal for being the Best Male Artiste among nine nominees.

He knew that he was a nominee but while he was not certain of his chances against the likes of three Soca monarchs, beyond the call of duty he assisted backstage to ensure that the show flowed smoothly.

The artiste, who is popularly known as ‘rubber waist’, in receiving the award from US- based, Yonette Hooper, expressed gratitude at the honour, and shared the disappointment he felt that local artistes did not see it fit to attend the event set aside to serve as an encouragement to their craft.

Nonetheless he told the appreciative audience “I stand here as the ambassador for those who are absent and I hope that the event gets more support next time around.”

The other nominees in that category included Kross Kolor camp members Adrian Dutchin, Lil Man (B52), and reigning Soca Monarch Bones Man, as well as Marlon ‘Malo’ Webster, Mark Batson, 24K (Sheldon Braithwaite) and Antigua-based Sparkey Drakes.

Save for Primo, none attended the awards show. Dutchin is in the USA, while Batson and Webster are on active duty on Cruise ships.

US-based Guyanese artiste, Yonette Hooper won the Best Female award, pipping no show nominees such as Big Red, Cyd Hooper, Shelly G and Melissa Vanilla Roberts.

JumoTelevision and radio personality, Kester Dean, who is known for his fiery, unswerving delivery of the Gospel of Jesus Christ dancehall and reggae style, as well as Cherylyn Maloney of ‘Don’t Give up’ fame, took home GAMA crystals for being the best local Gospel artistes.

Nominated in the same category as Eddie Neblett, Solid Youth and Anil Azeez; Dean, in accepting the award expressed disappointment at the apparent boycott of the event by local artistes and entertainment stakeholders such as producers and promoters.

He however felt encouraged that his work and contribution to the Guyanese music repertoire was being honoured in his hometown and lauded the efforts of the organisers for going the course despite the many obstacles.

“This is a good thing for Guyanese and it serves as an encouragement when you are recognised for your work and I will continue to support it because it offered me a great chance to network and I do see the bigger picture”.

Maloney was absent but her husband collected the award on her behalf. Neblett is in the USA preparing to launch a new album, while Azeez is in Trinidad.

Rajesh Dubraj, the 2009 Chutney monarch and Fiona Singh were adjudged the best Chutney singers in the male and female contests. None was in the audience   to collect the crystals.

Jory who recently launched his first mix tape and is popular for his ‘ah de real thing’ slogan was adjudged the best newcomer while Timeka Marshall, who was in Barbados for the Reggae on the Hill show, won the Best female artiste in the Reggae Dancehall category over Celeste David, Shelly G and Canada-based Donna Makeeda.

Fojo was adjudged the Best Male Reggae Dancehall category winner over artistes the likes of Alabama, Jory, Colin I, and Kapa Shanti.

Makeeda won the female category in the Reggae Culture category over Guyanese Cyd Hooper while US-based Reggae singer, Zebulun, won the male category.

Eddy Grant and Habeeb Khan both were announced as Lifetime Achievement Award honourees, while a crystal for International Music ambassador was announced for Jamaica-based Natural Black.

Other honorary awards were also handed out Eze Rockcliffe, Celia Samaroo, Pamela Maynard, Bonny Alves, Henry Rodney, Neisha Benjamin, Bappi Roopchand, Gordon Bevaughn, Pat Semple, Ras Camo Williams, Sammy Baksh and the Mighty Blue Flame.

Yesterday, the common explanation given regarding why locals were not intricately involved was that the event’s CEO, Sherlock Shephard “did not follow or honour all the protocols,” was a bit “disorganised” and “there was a break down in communication at many levels.”

Burchmore Simon told this publication yesterday that he had initial communications with Shepherd as did other local stakeholders, months in advance, but he (shepherd) never got back to them in a timely fashion.

Another said his team did not attend because the invitations to the event were received at about 16:00hrs on the day of the show.

‘Bring it’ T/20 song to be launched at the Edge

Mr Vegas, Fay-Ann Lyons to perform live

Energy, hype and pulsating entertainment is always associated with performances from Jamaican Dancehall artist Mr Vegas and Trinidadian Soca performer Fay-Ann Lyons and nothing less is expected tonight from 22:00hrs at the Edge Nightclub at the Tower Hotel in Georgetown when they perform for the first time live the theme song for the 2010 T/20 cricket World Cup which starts in Guyana on April 30.

The two celebrated Caribbean entertainers have joined forces for the making of the up tempo Soca and Dancehall mix theme song and the pair has promised an energized performance tonight at the official launching of the song in Guyana.

The Edge, Guyana’s latest and most modern nightclub has a capacity of 400 and tickets for tonight’s show is $2,500.

Accompanied by her musician husband Bunji Garlin, Fay-Ann Lyons, a three-time Trinidad and Tobago Carnival Road March champion (2003, 2008, 2009) who won the 2009 International Soca Monarch title while pregnant, explained the concept of the ‘Bring it’ song at a press conference yesterday at the Guyana National Stadium.

With hit songs like Lyon Empress, Mane the Matriach and Silver Surfer, the 30-year-old Fay-Ann said some feel that the ‘fete’ atmosphere at sports is not necessary but explained that she felt is was needed since Caribbean people are not passive people.

“The party atmosphere does not take away from the professionalism of the players and could actually inspire them because of the manner in which we celebrate,” Fay-Ann said.

Also present at the Stadium yesterday was 35-year-old Clifford Smith, know in the music industry as Mr Vegas after being given that nickname by his schoolyard football-mates, who thought that he kicked the ball like a Las Vegas dancer.

Rhonda Kelly, of Kelly/Holdings Limited, has been contracted to coordinate the activities of the artists for the first ever T/20 World Cup in the West Indies. She was also present yesterday.

Mr Vegas, who was hit in the face with a crowbar and had his jaw wired shut for six weeks after a scuffle over stolen master tapes, found fame in 1998 with hits such as Yu Sure, Jack It Up, and Latest News.

Mr Vegas informed that the ‘Bring it’ song, which was mainly written by USA based Jamaican Marlon Chin and developed by Fay-Ann and Mr Vegas, is all about bringing the positives to the matches.

‘The ICC wanted the energy … when they approached us they wanted to attract the youths. It’s not like when I was a youth. Back then you said cricket and everyone would tell you about the match they watched the night before. Now many of the youths don’t have that interest for cricket which is still the national sport of the West Indies. You talk about West Indies cricket now and many youths can tell you who Manchester United beat in football,” Mr Vegas explained.

Kelly disclosed that the ICC brought the concept of the song to the singers and they finished off the writing of the lyrics which was started by Chin.

Fay-Ann says the song encourages the entire family to come out to support the West Indies team and celebrate being Caribbean people. She songbird said the song is not only a party song but it is also very informative.

Both artists said they were honored to have been chosen to perform the theme song for the world event.

“I remember growing up and listening to cricket on the radio without even seeing the match and feeling if I was there. I remember Dujon and Richards batting and now to be actually involved in helping to inspire our present players with this song is humongous,” Mr Vegas said.

Both entertainers said they hoped they could create the right vibes at the venues to entertain the fans and motivate the players.

Bunji Garlin said he was here to not only support Fay-Ann as his wife and Mr Vegas as his ‘brethren’ but as someone who is proud to be a West Indian.

The singers and Kelly visited Antigua, Jamaica and Trinidad before coming here but tonight will be the very first time that the duo will be performing their riveting rendition since they did not perform in the three Islands they visited.

Guyana is also the first host venue that the singers are visiting and they are scheduled to tour the Islands which will also host matches (Barbados & St Lucia) before going to St Kitts which will host matches in the Womens division of the T/20 World Cup.

Sabrina Panday, who runs the Guyana ICC T/20 secretariat, said that the concept for the song was born after what transpired during the 2007 World Cup hosted by the West Indies.

“There were so many restrictions …some many thing you could not bring….it took away a lot from the atmosphere of West Indian cricket. This T/20 World Cup is a lot more relaxed without compromising security and the fans are being encouraged to bring it, the drums, the horns, the noise, the fun. The song also urges the West Indies players to bring their best game,” Panday said.
Mr Vegas said it’s all about bringing the positives and the energy while Fay-Ann said the ticket prices should encourage the fans to bring their friends in large numbers since the atmosphere, the rhythm section in the party stand, the fun and frolic and what should be enterprising cricket should all combine to create what should be an unforgettable event.

Introducing: Entertainer Ocie Ross

From Guyana to the USA and back

OC DreadFor those close to the dancehall fraternity in Guyana and the USA when you hear the name O.C Dread, the first thought that comes to mind is the Energy Squad. But whatever that initial thought might be O.C Dread has branded his name and his crew as a multi-talented sound system that’s quickly spreading throughout the airwaves.

Be it DJ, Emcee or promoter he has and still carries all these titles. And while he’s been mostly in the USA with short visits to Guyana he’s about to create what he calls a whirlwind to add his bit to the development of the local entertainment industry.

“I’m about to drop some real international shows starting in a matter of weeks.”

Though he spends much of his time in the USA unapologetically he states, “I am a son of the soil and my musical journey began in the land of my birth, my paradise on Earth, Guyana.”

Ocie Ross, who goes by the stage name OC Dread, learnt all the oldies and goldies from the 80’s under the guidance of a man he calls Roland B. At age 11, he was already spinning records with Jamroc crew but to him thus far his big break began with playing for the ever popular and probably the most sought after sound system, Fusion.

“It was at this point that I really began making my mark in Guyana’s Entertainment industry then he migrated to New York in the 90’s”.

He is confident that the sky is always the limit and pointed that to him New York offered him even bigger dreams and overwhelming success. After moving there, OC Dread worked with Lion Heart and Studio 1 but something keeps pulling him to step out on his own and chase after his dreams of being the man in charge.

The birth of O.C. Dread & Da Energy Squad moved from a dream to a reality. “We are always thinking outside the box and defying the odds.” He categorically states that he believes that “we have the energy to rock any crowd”.

As an entertainer O.C. Dread can perfectly scratch, mix or blend any track with ease. He has shared stages with many world renowned artists such as Serani, Spice, Natural Black, Capleton, Busy Signal as well as with other systems; standing out as one of the best entertainers at every location he touched.

Like many entertainers he confesses that music is his calling. “I love every aspect of this fascinating industry.” His hats include DJ, Emcee and a Promoter too and arguably he does it all and commendably so too.

Returning to his roots

Having lived out of Guyana for quite some time he has gained much experience but now his career calling seems to be for a return to his roots.

With conviction OC Dread said, “I want to be a part of this already thriving Entertainment industry…Guyana’s culture is rich and diverse and I want my sound system to be its musical melting pot.”

To him O.C. Dread & Da Energy Squad could be the final piece of the puzzle that will take Guyana’s Entertainment industry “from great to exceptional.”

Aside from being a professional, entrepreneur and amazingly talented person, O.C. Dread is very compassionate. He is also looking to help others with dreams of building the entertainment industry.

He says, “I want to help launch the musical careers of my fellow Guyanese and share my expertise with them.  He also confesses that he has worked closely alongside fellow Guyanese artistes and promoters such as Natural Black, First Born, Pamela Maynard, X 2 and others. He is advising that entertainment seekers should look out for his promotions and events as Guyana prepares for Easter and beyond.

Although he resides in New York he says, “My heart will forever be in Guyana. I am Guyanese for life and I love my people and my country”.

He said that living away has given him an appreciation for his homeland even more and remaining true to our pledge he says, “I pledge to always dedicate my energies towards the happiness and prosperity of Guyana.  To my fellow Guyanese, I want you to know that climbing the ladder of success is tough, getting there is hard work, but for those who want it badly enough it’s all worth it. And don’t forget, it’s okay to stumble but all you got to do is count it an experience, dust yourself off and keep going.

His first event is a Bright Colors Affairs at Club Cloud 9 on Easter Sunday, while on Easter Monday he will be hosting a big Appreciation Party at Club Wild Palms where he will be launching with Ed Hardy Vodka.

Hikers Juniors to Team Up With Old Fort For Trinidad Easter Tournament

Hikers JuniorsAfter an outstanding 2009 season, the Hikers Hockey Club is once again looking to give it’s youngsters a taste of international competition. This time around they will team up with the Old Fort Hockey Club as both clubs look to give their players early expose to the artificial surface that the international game is now played exclusively on.

Hikers became the first local team to feature in the Trinidad and Tobago Easter tournament, when they made their debut last year. The tournament is open to all clubs and schools within the Caribbean region and is played over a three day period with under 13, 16 and 21 categories for both boys and girls teams. Last year, Hikers placed third in the under 16 category, with their star player Shaquelle Assanah being named MVP of that category. In the under 21 category their two wins and two losses were not enough to get them out of the group stage.

The exposure that these young players received at last years tournament was the main catalyst for the team’s successful year in which they returned to captured the Noble House Goals Galore Second Division Title. They then went on to play undefeated to take the John Fernandes Insurance Second Division League Title and the GT&T Under 19 National indoor title. The outstanding youngsters from this team also played key roles in helping their senior team secure the Farfan and Mendes first division league title and the Banks Night Hockey first division title, as well as the Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor title for the fourth time in the past five years.

With the recent increase in airfare to the twin island republic the two clubs are still hoping to raise enough funds to cover the team’s participation in this year’s tournament which runs from the 31st of March to the 2nd of April at the Trinidad & Tobago National Hockey Centre. The team has already secured the look to match their silky smooth skills after being outfitted with new kit by Woodpecker Products, while Global Technology continues their invaluable educational partnership with the junior team.

CDC DonationsYesterday (February 1) Gail Vieira of Vizion Sounds who with Hits and Jams organised the United for Haiti concert handed over a cheque valued at $516,000 to Minister Priya Manick Chand at the Civil Defence Comission.

With support from more than 40 local artistes and entertainers representing the various studios and music producers, the Guyana United for Haiti concert staged two fridays ago ( January 22) was deemed a success by entertainer Kerwin Bollers.

Bollers, the concert Producer/Coordinator, said most of teh artistes were on target with inspiring musical messages in one of the many efforts to offer assistance to our brothers and sisters in Haiti”.

Bollers said, “We tried and in a matter of four days the Hits and Jams promotions group in collaboration with Visions Sounds managed to plan, organize and execute the concert that I believe will be remembered as a significant unifier for Guyanese artistes. It also showed that there are Guyanese people who care about others”.

Though the numbers were far less than we expected, for the short period of planning, close to 2000 persons flocked to the National Park for the concert which proved inspiring and also served it purpose of raising funds via the gate, the bars and the food outlets.

The singers performed at varying de but be it the searching ‘I want to know what love is’ and ‘Don’t cry’ songs done by Jessica Xavier or the encore of  “stand up for love’ delivered by new comer Jackie Hanover those in attendance were inspired and moved emotionally. There was also some steel pan playing of the nostalgic ‘My way’ and fashion displays from the Facts N Roses camp.
