Jumo Primo

Hot on the heals of releasing his contagious “badmind” video single Jumo Primo is set to release his mix tape on Monday September 17. The 13 tracks release is a combinition of Jumo’s new music such as Badmind, Dying days, OK, Hold Yah and Own Clothes are just some of the new songs on the CD while he has also included some of his already popular singles such as “dip and Go down’, One people (the Carib Soca Monrch winning song) Chipping and Bumper (the banks Groovy soca monrch winning song) amongst others. However, this mix tape is not like the regular ones: ‘ I also selected some of my favourite fellow artistes’ tracks from Jamaica such as Kartel, Movado, Pop Caan and I-Octaine as well as Kiprich to be part of the mixtape to show the level to which my songs are and in some cases even better in lyrical and arrangement context’ he said. The artiste just before boarding an aeroplane to Miami for a show with ‘Byron Lees Dragonaires’ said he’s also hearing good reviews from his’ badmind’ release as it is getting rotations in Suriname and other caribben countries. “Suriname look out for me soon as i’m coming there for a launch to meet my fans over there too” he said. Meanwhile Jumo says he has almost completed putting together another video for release soon titled ‘no more love’ done in the Reggae genres. Badmind experience becomes hit single
What started out as a disappointing phone call while in the american exchange barbershop has become a fast growing dancehall hit for soca king Jumo Primo. Speaking on the Mondale Smith hosted Caribbean Music Box show in Guyana Primo on saturday as the infectious hit BAD-MIND was launched live also on www.brutalradio.com the father of three said he was about to have his hair cut when his cell phone rang and a woman rubbed him the wrong way. “I was so hurt and upset at what I heard that I ask me barber friend to pass a piece of paper and a pen and in under five minutes I was done putting together the words of the song.” With raw emotions in the song he then recorded with various experiences under his belt. Launching the video after a week of teasers Primo sang the very catchy : “they will never see me fall, no not at all, like crab in a barrel dem a hunt you down you smile in yah face and tell you ah dem friend but watch out feh dem…look out feh bad mind people…dem a study bare evil. Dem bad mind you when jah bless you …but me sorry fuh dem, dem can’t see me end cause bad mind. Could never be me friend…”. Ultimately he’s working on a mix tape but decided to launch the single that is blazing with rotations on radio and television stations nation wide. Its an obvious hit judging from the more than 100 text messages that came in during the launch on Btv ch2. “I’m hoping that this song will become the anthem because every single human being has had the experience of being hated for progressing and from some of the people who suppose to be their friends and family” Jumo said. The video was filmed and produced in Brooklyn with cameo appearances by US based Guyanese artistes Gaddi G and little J. What’s next for Jumo?: as one of X2 he says there will soon be an area code patriotic launch modern style launch of a clothing line with the 592 Guyana flag area code Jerseys and vests for women coming soon. The video can be down loaded from youtube and he’s encouraging fans to share the video on facebook and other social media to take Guyanese music to the next level. The video will be available for sale at Matts Record bar and other locations that don’t pirate. Jumo Primo is famous for soca hits such as ‘krazy’ and has toured the caribbean extensively as a singer/entertainer with several bands such as the Byron Lee and the dragonaires and says with little to no sponsorship from corporate citizens he has had to foot the bill to the tune of almost US$3000 and as such is encouraging fans to buy the original video at a cost of US $5 (G$1000)

Miss Caribbean Culture Pageant 2011: Kiswana Abimola Jefford set to rep for Guyana

Kiswana Jefford

The sun was setting on the 31st July, 1990, when the wail of a bouncing baby girl pierced the confines of the Woodlands Hospital in the capital city of Guyana. Prematurely born, this bubbly baby girl put a smile upon the face of Elton Jefford (late) and brought cheerfulness into the life of Erica Sobers. “I embody the traits of a positive, prudent and assiduous young woman who is determined to become one of society’s leading ladies and leave a legendary mark on the world,” she emphatically states. Reflecting humility Kiswana is  resolute young woman, who endorses taking a stance for your beliefs and fulfilling your goals.

In Her words:
I embarked on my first educational journey at the South Ruimveldt Park Nursery School then South Ruimveldt Park Primary School where I sat the Secondary School Entrance Examinations (S.S.E.E). I subsequently completed my secondary level of learning at St. Stanislaus College and North Georgetown Secondary School where I amassed 13 (thirteen) subjects at the Caribbean Secondary Examination Council Examination (C.S.E.C)  Thus obtaining the Student of Excellency Award. Throughout the different levels of my education I participated in various extracurricular activities, mainly debating, reading, spelling b and track and field competitions. With leadership qualities, and an outspoken yet agreeable and cool disposition I was elected school prefect by my peers and school teachers. Motivated by my love for intellectual enhancement and elevation I am currently a second year International Relations student of the University of Guyana. However, upon its conclusion it is my objective to continue my journey academically by studying Law. Hence, taking me one step closer of accomplishing my career objective-a Criminal Attorney-at-Law.

When I am not working as an Administrative Assistant at Hughes, Fields and Stoby or studying, I embrace leisure in being an activist for environmental preservation and tourism education, reading, surfing the internet and dancing; I have a passion for the art form of dance and is presently a member of Classique Dance Company. My past times also expand to include hanging out with family and friends and spending quality time with elderly folks, orphans and/or children faced with adversities. An exemplification of eloquence, radiance and charisma I also epitomize the “girly-girl” who adores fashion and embraces a fanatical interest in pageantry. The latter of which prompted me to enter the 2009 Miss Guyana Talented Teen pageant where I placed third and secured the Miss Body Beautiful prize. My next pageant was the Miss Guyana Earth 2010 pageant of which I am the reigning queen and also attained the Queen of the Catwalk prize and Miss Body Beautiful once more. I then journeyed to St. Martin last year as Guyana’s Representative in the Miss Caraibes Hibiscus 2010 pageant and will be Guyana’s Beauty Ambassador at Miss Earth International 2011 in China. I recently participated in the Miss Guyana Jamzone 2011 pageant where I placed third and secure the Miss Body Beautiful title again.

I admire Nelson Mandela and the women of today, primarily Oprah Winfrey and Desiree Bernard, who are my role models. I believe the individual I am today is attributable to the morals my parents imbued in me whilst growing up, a sound educational background and everything I’ve experienced from childhood to date. Five years from now I envisage myself as having established my own charitable organization, having completed a Bachelors degree in International Relations and striving to procure a Degree in Law, a professional Dancer and Guyana’s representative at the prestigious Miss Universe and/or Miss World pageants. This is me, Kiswana Abimola Jefford-A spirited dancer, an aspiring lawyer, a role model, a patriot, a Guyanese…

This year’s pageant will be staged in two parts for the first time…The Swimsuit Competition is scheduled for St Kitts on Saturday July 23, 2011 at Carnival Village while the other segments – talent, evening gown, interview and crowning will be held in Nevis on Monday July 25.

Raunchy Celeste Davis – Much more than meets the eye

Celeste DavidStay focused and be patient knowing that there will be a lot of ups and downs in your life but ensure that God is in the midst of your decisions and always ask for his will to be done in your life. Such utterances might not be what you’d expect to hear from an artiste often described as raunchy but those are the words out of Celeste David’s mouth.

Popular for songs such as ‘back it up’, ‘My Sweetness’ and ‘Anthony’ etc this Berbice girl who broke onto the local music scene through the GT and T jingle competition is more than meets the musical eyes. Though she created quite a stir with her raunchy song and video that encouraged ‘all the ladies and shorties to back it up now’ and filling in for  Alicia Keys when Baby Cham sang  the ‘Ghetteo story’live on stage, she went missing but she’s by no means out of the music game.

Recently she told entertainer “I’ve been having some problems musically and personally but it’s all been sorted out.”

Her return to the Local music main stream spotlight began with her entry to the just concluded Groovy Soca monarch competition. Mainly to please her fans she entered with a hot song that encourages all to ‘watch how meh waist line rolls.’ But for some unknown reasons she did not find favor with the judges, much to her disappointment.

That aside, Celeste’s brief AWOL stint was not spent sitting idly by. Entertainer understands that the dark chocolate skinned woman has completed several ‘exciting’ recordings under the guidance of some new producers and vocal instructors in Barbados she also spent some time working on her image.

Explaining the new hairdo which saw her shaving the sides of her head, she said it was done in her quest for a new look with recommendations from a male hairstylist and she’s rocking the new do well.

While some might not know it both her parents are pastors and contrary to what some might believe she says “they do support me,” and this extended to her sister and one brother whom are all adults.

The one time worship leader and choir girl says ultimately her parents would like to see her back in church and that too is her desire sooner rather than later. While she sings music that is considered as worldly he confesses that her favorite song remains “fill my cup Lord… fill it up and make me whole.”

The diva in the making is influenced by divas the likes of Mariah Carey, Lauren hill and Whitney Houston said she always wanted to get involved in music generally since age 12.  Speaking of the local music industry she says thus far she has gained much recognition locally and ever growing fan base.

Personally: I am taken by a regular Guyanese guy who is older than I am… I wouldn’t call it love as yet because our relationship just started but I’m really enjoying the stage that it is at presently.”

Her message to teen age girls who are thinking of having a boy friend while at school is “limit your friendship and closeness with boys and focus on school not sexual relations during your teen years.” Look out for David as she continues her musical quest to one day hit the international music mainstream with her sights set on copping a Grammy for Guyana.

One-on-one with Natural Black: The man and the music

Natural BlackRecently Guyana has experienced an upsurge of local acts with international potential but as they work out their game plan Jamaica based Guyanese artiste Natural Black is already on a role. Ultimately he aspires to take his music to the four corners of the earth and with it the Golden Arrowhead. Recently he sat down for a one-on-one candid conversation on Caribbean Music Box where Mondale Smith got up in his Business.

Mondale: We know you as the Kid from Plaisance who moved from welding to selling clothes after school and then became a hit on the Jamaica Music scene who has made Guyanese proud. What have you been up to of recent?

Natural: For me it’s naturally all music from start and continually. Sometimes you get so caught up in it that you go missing for a while and people start to wonder if you detaching your self from them but that not it cause you are with them spiritually.

Mondale: Some say that while you are a Guyanese you have sold your birthright is that true?

Natural: You can’t sell your birthright, what you are, is what you are. Me ah Guyanese 1000 percent and that can’t change no matter what people say. But me want them feh know that me don’t forget them cause if we forget we self we gon lost we self.

Mondale: Your name is Mortimer…How did you end-up with NATURAL BLACK?

Natural: I usually dress in black and white and in Jamaica they usually try to find another name aside from the one you have on your birth paper. At first I was Black and White but the Jamaican industry can’t see through that so since my lifestyle has always been Natural I just take off the white and added Natural and it stuck.

Mondale: Ten albums and counting what has the road been like for you?

Natural: Rough and rugged as life set up but it has it smooth time so I give thanks for those. The challenge is a great challenge but knowing that you can and have reached the level of over coming. It’s a great a joy to know me reach from one level to another.

Mondale: you seem to be very spiritual explain that.

Natural: Yes from you know yourself spiritually you know that you can rise above and go through life with a true purpose. The spiritual part of me ensures that I do not hurt myself or others. I think my spiritual connection keeps me balanced so that I can flow through physically.

Mondale: Take us back to life after school before your big break…

Natural: I lost my mother when I was two and after school I joined the army as an apprentice. I moved all the way up to a Corporal and the experience thought me discipline. There I learnt welding then I resigned and started selling clothes by day and putting in appearances at some night spots at night. As I get in the talent line I started seeking out stage shows to perform then the opportunity came for a trip to Jamaica and the rest is my story.

Mondale: When you arrived in Jamaica what was it like?

Natural Black: In Jamaica the scene was a lot like Guyana and I had to work hard  with much dedication and that I did then I got to record my first song. Now ten albums down the road I’m going to take it to another level because there are always greater things to   life… I’m trying right now to create an album that appeals to all the people.

Mondale: Let’s talk Family, your family!

Natural: I grew up with my aunty after my Mother died when I was two.  Family life comes with various things and often we may not know or understand some mystic in life but I give thanks to my aunty who brought me through the struggle and eventually I got to know my brothers and sisters.  My current family includes my woman and two sons.

Mondale: What’s your advice to youths regarding education?

Natural: It requires education to be in my business. With out knowledge you can find yourself in a tight spot because talent alone will not do it. You need discipline, nurturing and guidance.

Tamika Henry ONE-ON-ONE (more that meets the eye)

Tamika HenryDo you know Miss Guyana Universe 2010?

Morvinya Sobers, Lianna Damond, Mia Rahaman, Odessa Phillips, Meleesa Payne Jenella Cox all took aim as  Guyanese Beauty ambassadors at the Miss Universe crown but while some got pre-pageant night international media attention they never made the final cut.  In fact no Guyanese in recent years has been able to do that despite their best formulas and strategies.

Last year our hopes were pinned on Tamika Henry: a rounded Guyanese Scholar who arguably is more than just a beauty and a warm personality. Yet again Guyana’s hopes were dashed, and some have thrown the towel in while optimists look to the 2011 competition with hopes galore.

The pampering clouds have faded leaving fond and treasured memories of a month of all expenses paid; enviable glitz and glamorous experiences in Sin City, Las Vegas, USA. Miss Guyana has returned home quietly void of the pomp and ceremony accorded queens in other countries with a mission.

A Queens’ College grandaunt from the Tucville Community, this Guyana scholar who completed a Degree in Forensics at the Miami University unlike some past queens is not likely to fade into the woodwork anytime soon. Tamika is among a privilege few that will not only be a beauty queen face but a personality to look for in Guyana’s forensic fraternity with an eye and  brain for detail that could see many crimes being solved through scientific genius.

During her One-one -One interview on Caribbena Music Box we realized that amidst all the famous educational and fashion exploits, Tamika is an average Guyanese girl, very simple with a love for cooking, music and playing with animals. But while she paraded herself in swimsuits on the local shores and the USA for the world to see she categorically states that “I’m a very strict church girl.”

One of five siblings in a home with its own financial difficulties, she blossomed from a shy, quiet and withdrawn lass into an outspoken woman of substance who realized that the best way to become a person of note in society she “had to be smart.”

“Education is the key to the world and fulfilling your dreams …If I’m smart enough I could get a scholarship, go study abroad and then make real money and live the good life…that was my aim growing up.” Hence she gained a place at Queen’s College where she did home work at times for some of her peers.

Mario hopes to come back to Guyana for bigger show

Music is the only thing that makes me happy
MarioStay true to your self because if you are in the industry and you are not doing what you like you are not going to be happy and your fans will notice it.  Additionally know that ‘You are never too old to learn so continue to perfect your craft.’ Such are the utterances of RnB artiste Mario during his first visit to the local shores this past December.

After socializing with and then offering his soulful crooning abilities to his Guyanese fans the 24-year-old says he’s smitten by the Guyanese hospitality and definitely will be back to entertain on a larger scale.

Through the Next Level Entertainment group in association with Tower Hotel he was the star act on stage for those who ushered in year 2011 at the hotel’s pool side under the theme Allure. Popular for dishing songs such as ‘you should let me love you’ the music heart throb told television talk show host Mondale Smith that Guyana is no different from what he had heard from other artistes who visited these parts and he concludes that ‘Guyana (Georgetown) is a beautiful place with beautiful people for one to come and have a great time, hence he will be back.

No date has been set for his return but he’s working on his fifth album which he says will feature him “going for everything from classic to some great radio records that can be organic reflecting the dark as well as the great places” he’s been in over the past year.

Like the fairy tale story, growing up music was his main outlet and escape from a tough neighborhood and he is eternally grateful to his grandmother and mother for keeping good music around him. “As a kid my mother used to buy me mikes and stuff like that and I’d listen to the radio and by the time I was 10, 11 years-old  I was entering talent shows with grown folks and winning” and that’s pretty much how he got started in music.

At age 15 while some were dreaming dreams his musical dreams began materializing with his first record and among the hits was the very celebrated teenage love story of ‘just a friend.’ Then came album two which had several and now with four chart toping albums to his name number five is on its way.

But above the music he sees education as playing a pivotal role in preparing one for handling your business in the ‘dog eats dog’ mainstream music industry.  Noting his experience and self education he read lots of books and artistes’ biographies but as he puts it ‘there’s nothing like the experience’ in an industry that is ever evolving.

His admonition to artistes hoping to make the main stream is: remember that it’s very important to learn from your mistakes and “always keep smart people around you that you trust who are looking after your best interest and will be honest with you about everything”.

Mario says for his bigger production Guyana show that he wants to bring back he’s felling vibes of live instruments and promises that when he returns he’s “definitely coming with a full band because this (Guyana) is a beautiful place and I want to give the people that soul they want and deserve.”  Assuring that he will keep it sexy for the ladies as well as classic when he returns to Guyana  after ten years in the music business  Mario says his drive to  hear his music   around the world  and  being given opportunities to make his fans happy keeps  him going.

Introducing: Raymond Hamilton (Young D.O.C)

“On a musical quest for greatness”

D.O.CBorn in Georgetown on May 20, Raymond Hamilton (Young D.O.C) grew up in Gordon Street Kitty then he migrated to the US in April of 1998 and has made the USA his home. There he started pursuing music in 2000 and has since been writing, recording and appearing on shows around the DMV (DC, Maryland, and VA). Like most artistes he has always dreamed of making it in the music big leagues because according to him “it inspires me to do positive things with life”. Even as he earns a living on the daily grind at one of the Foot Locker Stores in the USA he often thinks of life back home in ‘good old Guyana.’ “I would like to do a lot for my home country, because I know the younger generation listen and look up to musician in the music industry today and that in itself is motivation for my music”. Boasting more than ten years of officially being a singer/ song writer he is one to watch as a budding artiste. His inspiration he gets from the now dead 2pac Shakur and his grandparents. With his eyes on the prize to become a mainstream international artiste he started recording and writing because he knew it was something that he always loved and to him he’s at that point were he’s ready to drop a few albums.

He is also hoping that his talent can take him to the next international music level with tours while granting him opportunities to show what the Guyana born US based kid can do. “I’m also hoping that through my music a lot of doors will open not just for me but also for other youths following after me. Ultimately he says he’s after ‘the whole 9 yards’ as he has over 100 songs and has also dropped a few mix tapes in Maryland. At present with more than 100 compositions penned and the release of several mixed tapes he is now working towards releasing an album hopeful by Spring of 2011 and will be dropping several singles in the next 2-4 weeks. The first single will be titled ‘WO MA LIFE WOULD BE featuring himself and local artistes ‘Natural One’. When asked how far he hopes to take his music he said “to all the young kids around the world starting with my country and I will make a different I promise you.”

Roger Hassle is ready to get Groovy

Roger Hassel‘You want me’ is the message that Roger ‘Brains’ Hassle a former lead singer with the Brutal Jammers Band is  taking to the  inaugural Banks Groovy Soca Monarch competition aimed at copping the coveted title.

The father of one who is a construction worker will take on 13 others including Jumo, Big Red, B52, Dallas Forte and Shelly G amongst others Saturday  at the Uitvlugt Community Center ground in  round one of the competition. “I was in one of  Carib Soca Monarch Competition and made it to the top ten but after that I’ve not been in competition… however I’m ready for this one,” he told this publication.

He said he entered this competition because it takes him closer to his line of music where you actually sing. There is no clear front runners because it very competitive and any of the lot can win he added.” My song was written long before the competition was announced and was waiting for release and then the competition came  so here I am and ready to sing for real groovy soca music.

His musical experience spans more than ten years when he began singing with the all boys group titled ‘Heart Beat.’ But after four years in existence that group was quashed and he became a lead singer for the Fire Klann Band. His next stop was as a member of the Brutal Jammers band.

Guyanese music lovers may remember him for songs such as ‘proud to be Guyanese’, ‘Baby just Wine On Me and Can’t Hold Me Down. He also is one of the voices on the Brutal tracks ‘Step-Hard Medley’ singing about ‘Money’ and will soon be launching the video for the competition song.

The song’s hook is “I know you want me, cause I see you watching me…yes the way you watching me” set to a soca groove that tells of his forward approach to a young lady who sees him as eye candy.

He is encouraging all Guyanese music lover to come out and support the event as it offers Guyanese an addition of new quality December 18th at National Stadium

Dallas Forte to share story of Unspeakable Joy Groovy Style

Dallas ForteIn the history Groovy Soca singing on the local shores there has not been many gospel based songs entering competitions but  through Dallas Forte this is about to change. One of 28 singers who made the shortlist to compete in the inaugural event he believes that he’s got the right arrangement and message to win the inaugural Banks Groovy Soca Monarch. The 26-year-old says “My song (Unspeakable Joy) is actually my personal testimony of where I used to be and where I am now through God’s grace”.  He opines that many people can identify with his storyline and added that “the hook will certainly have people grooving in a positive direction.” Dallas who has been singing since age 9 in the West Ruimveldt Boys Choir is known in some circles as the guy with some suave pipes who can dish almost any RnB or soulful tune with little effort. However, he’s since become a ‘church boy’ who serves as a worship leader in his local church and is  pinning his  public  votes on and support on  his fellow  Christian  brethren as well as those who like positive vibes. Todate the PC Graduate he has written and recorded several songs such as “Serve, Trust, Love” a pop worship song making circulation in Barbados, the USA and Trinidad.

He entered the competition as he says “to do me and throw down with any artistes while sharing the good news of Jesus Christ”. Speaking of his chances she says “I stand a pretty Good chance despite the fact that I’m going against the crème de la Crème of artiste in Guyana”. His ultimate musical aspiration is to make music a career while showing youths that one does not have to be part of the negative crowd to be popular and successful. He has performed as an opening act for artistes the likes of Papa San, Stitchie, DJ Nicholos and Christafari and is still a lead singer with the Second coming Band. He was also a finalist in the inaugural GT&T Jingle competition.
