Bank of Guyana celebrates 47 Years with Fashion Extravaganza

Some Dresses by ShaSha Designs

The Bank of Guyana presented Fashion Extravaganza last Saturday, 20 October 2012 at the Theatre Guild. The celebration was held in honour of the Bank’s 47th Anniversary and featured designs from three local designers and performances by some of our very gifted local ladies.
The show began with the colourful and very jovial designs by Sha Sha Designs’, Keisha Edwards. The line called Summer Fun featured pieces that screamed cosiness, fun and excitement.
It was kind of hard to distinguish the seasoned models from the Bank of Guyana models because they all moved like professionals. Who knew Central Bank had all that talent, but more importantly who knew that they were interested and very willing to support local talent? The evening’s extravaganza is testimony of the Bank’s attentiveness and readiness to promote local talent.

Models exhibit elegant fashion

The almost packed Theatre Guild was serenaded by two of Guyana’s most remarkable singers. They were both given much exposure during this year’s Jamzone Summer Break and it was pleasing to see them both appearing at Central Bank’s Fashion Extravaganza. Lisa Punch treated the audience to two of her very own songs, Secret Admirer and How We Party; the latter inspired by her three year old brother. She has a captivating voice (and will one day grow up to make millions).
The next designer to present her pieces was Patricia Helwig. Her line called Ethnic Fusion featured an eccentric mix of ethnic clothing for both men and women. Her African pieces were displayed with suitable head wraps to match. So if ever you’re looking for exquisite African pieces and/or head wraps, Mrs. Helwig is the woman to contact.  Jackie Hanover is the second exceptional singer I alluded to earlier. She’s a screamer, but her notes are constantly on point and Adele and Etta James would both be very pleased to know that she sings their songs brilliantly.

A special appearance was made by Miss Guyana Universe, Ruquayyah Boyer who treated the audience to her spoken word piece which speaks to social issues affecting society.
The final designer to showcase her pieces was Zarinah Hameed with a line called Natural Mystic. Her line is a synthesis of cultural and contemporary designs. She caters for both men and women and outfits for any occasion.

The evening wasn’t just modelling and singing, the audience was also treated to an enthralling interpretative piece by two dancers from the Classique Dance Company.
And to end the show, Keisha Edwards got another chance to wow the crowd with more pieces from Sha Sha Designs. The event though dubbed a Fashion Extravaganza featured much more than just fashion – outstanding, laudable, Guyanese talent was on display.

The very lively Mondale Smith was the MC for the event.
Kudos to the Bank of Guyana for coordinating this event, the performers and designers for providing the entertainment and the audience for celebrating with the Bank! Evening well spent.

Lady Saw
Lady Saw

Lady Saw
Since bursting on to the music scene in 1994 Marian ‘Lady Saw’ Hall has produced eight and counting albums to her name such as ‘Lover Girl’, ‘Give me a reason,’ ‘walk out,’ ‘my way’ and 99 ways etc. Lady Saw received a gold certification from the R.I.A.A. for “Smile” with Vitamin C, a triple-platinum certification from the R.I.A.A. for “Underneath It All”, her 2003 collaboration with No Doubt, and a Grammy Award for Best Performance by a Duo or Group for her featured performance on No Doubt’s single “Underneath It All”. She recorded such songs as “Freedom of Speech” and enjoyed a big hit in Jamaica with “Hardcore” in 1985, which was followed up with “Welding Torch.” She also recorded “Condom,” warning girls of the dangers of unprotected heterosexual sex. Lady Saw recorded duets with major stars, including Beenie Man, Luciano, Dennis Brown, Bounty Killer and Beres Hammond.

By the mid-1990s she moved away from slackness towards “conscious” lyrics. In 1999 she had a major hit in the United States with “Smile”, recorded with Vitamin C, which peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100, also a major hit in New Zealand and Canada, and certified gold with over 500,000 sales. In 2002, her collaboration with No Doubt, “Underneath It All”, which reached number three in the US and sold more than three million copies, reaching triple platinum certification. The track won a Grammy Award for’Best Performance by a Duo or Group’. Lady Saw is the first female deejay to win a Grammy Award and to be certified as a triple-platinum artist and is also touted as the first woman to headline dancehall shows outside her native Jamaica. She launched her own record label, Divas Records, in January 2010 and has since released a single ‘no less than a woman,’ a song that addresses the issue of women who have not been able to birth a child of their own. The Lyrics that encourages women to understand “ not having a child don’t make you any less than a woman, I got so much love to give to so much unwanted kids” as message that mirrors he life experience.

Spice
Spice

Spice returns yet again
The ‘Jim Screechie queen’, Spice, is billed to return after two high-energy performances in Guyana and is promising an even more exciting return. Guyana knows her capabilities on stage as while she was originally contracted for one Guyanese performance, Spice made such an impression on her Guyanese fans, that she was immediately booked by yet another promoter for another event the following day. She is quoted as stating “I love my Guyanese fans. It was such great energy and the vibe was really crazy for both events. The turnout, even for the last-minute event was phenomenal, but it just shows what can happen when you hit the stage with a great set and give the fans their money’s worth.” The mother of two, made the radical decision to hit the stage one week after the birth of her daughter, NichoLatoya and stated back then that “… I’m a naturally assertive person and I go after anything I want. I was in a position where I was physically fit to hit the stage again, so why hold back?”
The deejay is known for her’spicy’ tracks, Fight Ova Man, Ramping Shop (featuring the equally controversial, Vybz Kartel), Back Broad, Slim vs. Fluffy (featuring Pamputtae), Jim Screechie and others.

“Tony is a fabulous producer and his stuff has always been mainly cross-over material. With the two tracks, fans can definitely expect the unexpected. In the same way that Jim Screechie caught persons off-guard because they didn’t expect that kind of flow from me, the two songs are gonna do that,” she says. Her other songs include ‘I Wanna Know’ and Keep It All as well as ‘Me Good’.

Tanya Stephens ready to give conscious diva vibes.
Be it the National Park or a club Tanya Stephens has proven that she’s all about lyrics and message to empower women and to dish the dirt on reality for men to wake up and celebrate their women despite. She’s been to Guyana on several occasions and somehow fans can never get enough of her no matter what and she’s ready to dish the unadulterated truth be it a little white lie, a good ride, on these streets. This mother of a teenage daughter is not afraid to dish it to the man (the powers that be) or the KKK and she’ bold enough to tell a married man lustfully that ‘it’s a pity’ or ‘you nuh ready feh this yet. ‘ Her Repertoire is endless and she’s ready to serve it all up to her Guyanese fans.

Igloo Ice Cream National Junior Hockey Championships

Hikers Under 21 Boys Champs

The Igloo Ice Cream National Junior Hockey Championships came to an exciting conclusion on Sunday afternoon at the national gymnasium when arch rivals Hikers and GCC treated the crowd to a memorable Under 21 Men’s Final. The two day tournament which featured six categories was the highlight of the year for the 102 junior hockey players that represented their club and school teams. After GCC All Stars, GCC and Hikers took home the Under 13, Under 16 Girls and Under 16 Boys titles respectively on the opening day, Sunday was the schools and under 21 players turn to take center stage.

First up it was Marion Academy, St. John’s College, St. Stanislaus College, Queens College and the surprise of the tournament Christ Church who produced some entertaining hockey in the morning session. Marion Academy finished the preliminary rounds as the top team and faced the 4th seed Christ Church in the first semifinal but it was the underdogs who produced the shock of the tournament when they came from behind to pull off 2-1 upset. The other semifinal featured St. Stanislaus College against longtime rivals Queen’s College who exacted revenge for their shock defeat earlier in the year with a 5-0 demolition of the Brickdam school. QC took their momentum into the finals and went past a proud Christ Church 3-0 to become the first National Schools Champion.

GCC Under 21 Girls Champions
GCC Under 21 Girls Champions

In the Under 21 Girls category the GCC girls once again proved that they were in a class of their own, completing a clean sweep of their matches with Ashley deGroot leading the way for her team. The Boys under 21 Final however was a close encounter between arch rivals Hikers and GCC. After a frantic start the game settled before Hikers’ Leon Bacchus caught the GCC defense napping in the third minute and stole the ball in the D before slotting into the bottom left corner. GCC’s Mark Sargeant responded almost immediately to tie up matters at 1-1. Both teams then squandered numerous opportunities before, tournament stand out Aroydy Branford went on one of his trademark runs to seal the game in the 16th minute.

At the presentation ceremony Guyana Hockey Board member Gail Harding thanked the sponsors Igloo Ice Cream for supporting the development of junior hockey in Guyana, she also the parents, coaches and players who made the tournament possible. Next up for the Board will be the National Senior Indoor Championships which is scheduled for later this month.

Back Down Memory Lane: Jamaican Invasion

Jamaican Artist
Jamaican Artist

While the focus is often on the more youth oriented entertainment those looking for the sounds of yester year sung by the original artistes are advised to mark their calendar. Through a private initiative on the part of Business man Solomon and his wife Jamaican acts Ernie Smith, Winsome Benjamin, Ken Lazarus and Pluto Shervington are coming to Guyana to take some back down memory lane and some will fall in love all over again while some will fall in love for the first time.

Some lucky persons will win free tickets to the first concert billed for the 27th at the National Cultural Center by tuning into the Mondale Smith hosted Caribbean Music Box programme aired on BTV ch2 between the hrs of 4 and 6pm (16:00- 18:00hrs).

While a dinner and dance is planned for September 29 at the Plaza Roof Garden where Jamaican the acts of yesteryear will offer live entertainment in a more cozy setting compliments of the Solomon’s. The tickets for that event is going at a valued of cost $5000 each and can be bought at the Plaza Hotel.
Born Glenroy Anthony Michael Archangelo Smith, Ernie Smith is popular for songs such as ‘Pitta Patta’, a Bend Down, ‘Ride on Sammy,’ ‘One Dream,’ ‘Life Is Just For Living,’ Help Me Make It Through The Night,’ ‘Everything I Own’ and a repertoire that includes just over 21 albums.
Ken Lazarus is a Jamaican ska and reggae singer who is probably best known for his work as a lead singer in Byron Lee’s Dragonaires band. In the early 60s the band toured extensively in the Caribbean which made Ken Lazarus a popular singer on the island. He also became famous as a highly commercial cover artist. Later on he changed his style, recording roots and culture sides.

Pluto Shervington began his career in the early 1970s as a member of the show-band Tomorrow’s Children his hits include ‘Ram Goat Liver,’ ‘Dat’- about a Rastafarian with a secret liking for pork and ‘Your Honor’ which tells the story of a guilty man pleading his innocence even as he had his shirt in list left and his pants in his right’. In addition to his work as a singer, Shervington has a notable reputation as a talented bass guitarist, and as a recording engineer. He has a repertoire of 13 albums to his name done mostly in Jamaican patois (Creole). The Jamaican Gleaner reports that Pluto Shervington, also known as Pluto (born Leighton Shervington, 13 August 1950, Kingston, Jamaica), is a reggae musician, vocalist, engineer and producer. His output is mostly representative of soca -styled reggae, and over the years Shervington gained a reputation as a talented bass guitarist, as well as for his fine vocal interpretations. His output was briefly popular in the UK, despite the fact that his ‘Patois’ was largely unintelligible to most of the British population.

He is best known for his single Dat – about a Rastafarian with a secret liking for pork, contrary to his faith – which achieved considerable chart success internationally in 1976. He got into the Top 20 in the UK Singles Chart again six years later, with another best selling cut, entitled Your Honour. This song dealt with a prisoner’s courtroom pleas of innocence, in the face of insurmountable evidence to the contrary. The song’s somewhat racy nature and comical styling is in the best traditions of calypso, and many elements of reggae.
In 1974, Shervington engineered Little Roy’s album, Tafari Earth Uprising. Pluto Shervington moved from his West Indian homeland in the 1980s, to Miami, Florida. Nevertheless he returns to his roots periodically to perform.
